Abstract:
An earlier version was presented at the international conference "L'Affaire Dreyfus cent ans après" held at the Hebrew University, November 1994. Relates that during 1898-99 Italy underwent a serious economic, social, and political crisis which appeared to threaten the progress of a liberal democracy in the making. At the beginning of the 20th century, Italy resumed its march towards democracy. These events in Italy influenced the way in which the Dreyfus case was perceived. Fear of modernity was the main issue that, directly or indirectly, affected the considerations of Italian political culture regarding the Dreyfus case. Examines analyses published in the Italian press of the time. Most of the commentators considered antisemitism one of the main causes of the Dreyfus Affair.
