Abstract:
In 1899, fearing an international boycott of the World's Fair, which was to open in Paris in 1900, President Emile Loubet pardoned Dreyfus. The victory of the Dreyfusards turned into a victory of the anti-clerical camp in France, whose goal was separation between church and state. Such a measure could have been a hard blow to the country's Jewish religious life; thus, the more conservative part of French Jewry chose to dissociate itself from its former allies, the anti-clerical Dreyfusards, and to maintain neutrality concerning the planned governmental measures.
