Abstract:
Describes, briefly, how the Holocaust was implemented in the USSR. Examines historiography of the Holocaust in the Soviet Union, where the Holocaust is not presented as a unique phenomenon, but is rather seen as a result of fascist racism. Contends that there is considerable variation in Soviet historiography - some histories contain no references to the Jews, while others give a sympathetic account of Jewish suffering. Suggests reasons for this variation, pointing out that it may just be a reflection of the views of individual writers. There are subjects not mentioned at all in the Soviet histories: for instance, antisemitism in the Red Army, and the existence of separate Jewish partisan groups. Argues that one of the results of this treatment of the Holocaust was the Soviet equation of Zionism with fascism.
