Recollections of the flow of refugees in Vienna and the scarceness of food. Various public poetry recitation in Vienna and Prague. Courtship and marriage to Martin Freud. Recollections of the Freud family and the "Herr Professor" Freud himself. Difficulties to start a household in postwar Austria. Martin, who had studied law, obtained a position as a clerk in a bank. Difficulties of married life. Birth of her children Walter (1921) and Sophie (1924). Starting a career in speech therapy. Training at the clinic for speech and voice disorders of Dr. Froeschel. Memories of the worker's uprise in 1927. Position as a lecturer in speech therapy at the Vienna University in 1932. Political instability due to the rise of fascism in Europe.     Kurzfassung: Four brief memoirs by David Friedman, describing his experiences from 1933-1945 including the end of his career in Berlin, his move to Prague with his wife and baby, deportation to the ghetto of Lodz and later to Auschwitz, forced labor in Gleiwitz I, liberation in the camp Blechhammer, his emotional collapse and life the first months after the liberation in Cracow, Prague and Ostrava where he resumed to work as a painter and graphic artist; letter by David Friedman to the German periodical "Quick"; clippings regarding a survivors' gathering in Washington, D.C. in 1983 including drawings by Friedman and information on his second wife, Hildegard Taussig Friedman; ICJC Newsletter from 1983 refering to David Friedman's art in a Yad Vashem publication; photocopy of postcards by Hilde Taussig from Theresienstadt in 1942.

    Kurzfassung: The memoir describes Mieke Monjau's involvement in the gymnastics movement and her political interest. Mieke attends the Hilda-Senff school for rhythmic gymnastics and dance. Mieke and her boyfriend get involved in the theater scene of the cabaret "Kiste". Cultural life in Duesseldorf. Engagement and marriage to the Jewish painter Franz Monjau. Fascination with nature and outings in the mountains. Political persecution after the Nazi take-over in 1933. Imprisonment of Mieke and Franz Monjau. After the discharge of her husband from his teaching position, Mieke interrupted her training as a dancer and the couple struggled to make a living. Move to Berlin. Mieke and Franz dismissed their plans to emigrate due to their feeling of responsibility for their Jewish friends and family members in Germany. Friendship with the painter Julo Levin. Recollections of the November pogrom night in 1938. Deportation of Jewish friends. Arrest of Mieke Monjau. After her dismissal she went to Auschwitz in an attempt to free a friend. Her husband went underground in order to escape deportation. Denunciation of Franz Monjau and transport to Buchenwald concentration camp, where he was killed soon after. Mieke Monjau was the only surviving member of the circle of Jewish and oppositional artists. She helped organizing the re-establishment of the "Kulturbund" and worked with Bertolt Brecht to coordinate the "Kuenstlerhilfe".
