Abstract:
Arnold Schoenberg, the composer and artist, was born a Jew and converted to Protestantism. His Jewish physiognomy, of which he was very much aware, and his confrontation with the antisemitism of his period, hindered him from totally changing his identity. The article explores his conflict of self-identity in relation to his religious and ethnic identity as it is reflected in his writings and in some seventy self-portraits, all of them showing only his head.
