Abstract:
From the introduction: With the publication of this volume, the Yeshiva University Museum has completed a task it set itself five years ago: the recreation and documentation of the substance, spirit, and presence of the Ashkenazi historical experience from its emergence on the stage of Jewish history in tenth-century Europe to its near extinction in the murderous years of the Nazi era. Both the exhibition and the publication present the Ashkenazi heritage as a unique cultural phenomenon that developed in German lands during the Dark Ages and persisted despite the Crusades, the Black Death, and frequent expulsions of its carriers from one German prinicpality to another.
