    Abstract: The corpus of Aramaic magic bowls from Sasanian Mesopotamia is perhaps the most important source we have for studying the everyday beliefs and practices of the Jewish, Christian, Mandaean, Manichaean, Zoroastrian and Pagan communities on the eve of the Islamic conquests. The bowls published in this volume are from the Schøyen Collection, which has over 650 texts in Jewish Babylonian Aramaic, Mandaic and Syriac, and forms the largest collection of its kind in the world. This volume presents editions of fifty-five Jewish Babylonian Aramaic texts, with accompanying introductions, translations, philological notes, photographs and indices. The themes covered are magical seals and signet-rings. It is the second in a multi-volume project that aims to publish the Schøyen Collection of magic bowls

Dieses Buch will die Erinnerung an den Holocaust in der Zusammenarbeit von Überlebenden und Zeichner:innen auf ungewöhnliche Weise bewahren und weitergeben, gerade auch an eine junge Leserschaft, indem es eingespielte Sehgewohnheiten und Bilder vom Holocaust aufbricht. Ausgewiesene Zeithistoriker:innen erklären in knappen, instruktiven Nachworten den Kontext der Geschichten, die aber auch ohne solche Erläuterungen unmittelbar und auf ergreifende Weise ein unfassbares Geschehen lebendig werden lassen.

    Abstract: This work focuses on the conception of God of the medieval Jewish philosopher and legal scholar, Hasdai Crescas (1340-1410/11). It demonstrates that Crescas’ God is infinitely creative and good and explores the parallel that Crescas implicitly draws between God as creator and legislator, which is rooted in his understanding of the Deity as continuously involved in generative activity through the outpouring of goodness and love as manifest by multiple, simultaneous and successive worlds and a perpetually expanding Torah.     Abstract: On the Life of Abraham displays Philo’s philosophical, exegetical, and literary genius at its best. Philo begins by introducing the biblical figures Enos, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as unwritten laws. Then, interweaving literal, ethical, and allegorical interpretations, Philo presents the life and achievements of Abraham, founder of the Jewish nation, in the form of a Greco-Roman bios, or biography. Ellen Birnbaum and John Dillon explain why and how this work is important within the context of Philo’s own oeuvre, early Jewish and Christian exegesis, and ancient philosophy.     Abstract: Wer waren die Nationalsozialisten? Diese einfache Frage berührt den Kern der NS-Herrschaft. Denn wer sie präzise beantworten will, der muss wissen, wer das Dritte Reich ermöglicht und durch sein Handeln – oft bis zuletzt – unterstützt hat. Ulrich Herbert, einer der angesehensten Zeithistoriker der Gegenwart, geht in diesem Buch den spezifischen Merkmalen der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur nach und analysiert von den Ursprüngen des Judenhasses bis zum Werdegang einstiger NS-Funktionäre in der Bundesrepublik zentrale Themen der deutschen Geschichte des 20.     Abstract: Die Erforschung der Holocaustliteratur hat Hochkonjunktur. Was aber ist unter dem Begriff eigentlich zu verstehen? Wo ist seine Verwendung sinnvoll, wo stößt sie an Grenzen? Bislang wurde der Terminus weitgehend unreflektiert benutzt, Versuche einer Konzeptualisierung haben in Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft kaum stattgefunden. Insofern beschreitet der vorliegende Band neue Wege. Die Beiträge lassen anhand unterschiedlicher methodischer Näherungen und auf der Grundlage exemplarischen Textmaterials ein umfassendes Bild von der Reichweite und den Grenzen des Begriffs Holocaustliteratur als eines literaturwissenschaftlichen Konzepts entstehen. Dabei wird hinterfragt, wo Funktionalität und Sinnhaftigkeit einer solchen Begrifflichkeit, insbesondere mit Blick auf immer neue und in der zeitgenössischen Literatur vielfältiger werdende Formen der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Genozid, zu verorten sind. Die Beiträge bringen eine wichtige Erkenntnis klar zum Vorschein: Die literaturwissenschaftliche Erforschung der Holocaustliteratur kommt ohne präzise Definition ihres Untersuchungsgegenstandes nicht aus, doch impliziert eine solche Definition keineswegs, dass es sich dabei um ein starres System handelt. Vielmehr erweist sich die Holocaustliteratur als ein in all seinen strukturellen wie funktionalen Facetten veränderliches Phänomen der Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte, das aufgrund seiner thematischen Breite und der Vielfalt ästhetischer Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten zu immer neuen Lektüren und Relektüren einlädt

    Abstract: Wie lässt sich Geschichte von ihrem möglichen Ende her begreifen? Der deutsch-jüdische Schriftsteller und Philosoph Günther Anders (1902–1992) ist für seine Deutungen der atomaren Endzeit bekannt. Anna Pollmann rekonstruiert aus Anders’ philosophischen und literarischen Schriften sein negatives Geschichtsdenken von der Genese in den 1930er Jahren bis hin zur Rezeption seiner Endzeitdiagnosen in den neuen sozialen Bewegungen. Das Buch erzählt von der Zerrüttung des Geschichtsbewusstseins im 20. Jahrhundert. Es macht sichtbar, wie sehr sich diese auch in der Form seines Werkes spiegelt. Die Zäsuren von Auschwitz und Hiroshima werden dabei in ihrer jeweils unterschiedlichen Bedeutung für die Grenzen historischen Denkens behandelt. Die Topografie von Andersʼ Emigration und Remigration nachzeichnend, führt die Studie an biografische Stationen wie Paris, Los Angeles, Berlin und Wien und in die ideengeschichtlichen Kontexte seines Geschichtsdenkens.

    Abstract: Michael L. Morgan is an Emeritus Chancellor Professor at Indiana University and the Senator Jerahmiel S. and Carole S. Grafstein Visiting Chair in Jewish Philosophy at the University of Toronto.     Abstract: Martin Buber: His Intellectual and Scholarly Legacy is a collection of contemporary reflections on one of the most pivotal figures of modern Jewish thought. Born in Austria and reared in Galicia, Buber (1878-1965) became a spiritual representative of Judaism in German culture before emigrating to Jerusalem on the brink of the Shoah. His prolific writings on matters spanning the Hebrew Bible and New Testament to Hasidism and Zionism inspired diverse audiences throughout the world. Jahrhunderts in all seinen Widersprüchen. Aufgrund des breiten thematischen Spektrums von Vilém Flussers Werk ist die Biographie auch für Leser_innen jenseits der Philosophie und der Medientheorie von Interesse.
    Abstract: This biography - the first of its kind - is dedicated to the life and works of Vilém Flusser. Born as the son of Jewish parents in Prague in 1920, he flees from the Nazis, who murder his whole family in a concentration camp, via London to Brazil in 1939. In 1972 he returns to Europe, where he becomes famous in Germany as a "digital thinker"in the 1980s. His influence on philosophy, and particularly media science, are undisputed. Vilém Flusser's extraordinary and turbulent life, which ends in a fatal car crash in 1991, is also a portrait of the 20th Century with all its contradictions. Due to the wide thematic range of Vilém Flusser`s work, this biography is also interesting to readers of other subjects besides philosophy and media theory.

    Abstract: Im neunten Band der Reihe geht Ansgar Martins kabbalistischen Spuren in der Philosophie Theodor W. Adornos (1903–1969) nach. Der Frankfurter Gesellschaftskritiker griff im Rahmen seines radikalen materialistischen Projekts gleichwohl auch auf ‚theologische‘ Deutungsfiguren zurück. Vermittelt durch den gemeinsamen Freund Walter Benjamin (1892–1940) stieß Adorno dabei auf das Werk des Kabbala-Forschers Gershom Scholem (1897–1982). Zwischen Frankfurt und Jerusalem entwickelte sich eine lebenslange Korrespondenz. Für Adorno erscheint vor dem Hintergrund lückenloser kapitalistischer Vergesellschaftung jede religiöse Sinngebung in der Moderne als unmöglich. Der Tradition der jüdischen Mystik schreibt er hingegen eine innere Affinität zu dieser hoffnungslosen Logik des ‚Verfalls‘ zu. Sie scheint ihm zur unumgänglichen Säkularisierung religiöser Gehalte aufzufordern. Adornos kabbalistische Marginalien beziehen einen breiten Horizont jüdisch-messianischer Ideen ein. Er verleugnet dabei nie, dass es ihm um eine sehr diesseite Verwirklichung geoffenbarter Heilsversprechen zu tun ist: Transzendenz sei als erfüllte Immanenz, als verwirklichte Utopie zu denken. In diesem Anliegen sieht Adorno selbst jedoch gerade seine Übereinstimmung mit der Kabbala. Adornos kabbalistische Motive, die auf Scholems Forschungen zurückgehen, werden hier ausführlich an seinen Schriften und Vorlesungen untersucht. In seinem Verständnis der philosophischen Tradition sowie im Modell der Metaphysischen Erfahrung suchte er etwa explizit Anschluss an Deutungen der Kabbala: Das unerreichbare Urbild der Philosophie sei die Interpretation der geoffenbarten Schrift. Wie säkularisierte heilige Texte wurden Werke von Beethoven, Goethe, Kafka oder Schönberg so zum Anlass für ‚mystische‘ Interpretationen. Deren detaillierte Untersuchung erlaubt, das viel beschworene jüdische Erbe von Adornos Philosophie zu konkretisieren und bedenkenswerte Einzelheiten von der Negativen Dialektik zur Ästhetik in den Blick zu nehmen.

    Abstract: In this volume, Gabriella Elgrably-Berzin offers an analysis of the fourteenth-century Hebrew translation of a major eleventh-century philosophical text: Avicenna’s Kitāb al-Najāt (The Book of Salvation), focusing on the psychology treatise on physics. The translator of this work was Ṭodros Ṭodrosi, the main Hebrew translator of Avicenna’s philosophical writings. This study includes a critical edition of Ṭodrosi’s translation, based on two manuscripts as compared to the Arabic edition (Cairo, 1938), and an appendix featuring the section on metaphysics. By analyzing Ṭodrosi’s language and terminology and making his Hebrew translation available for the first time, Berzin’s study will help enable scholars to trace the borrowings from Todrosi’s translations in Jewish sources, shedding light on the transmission and impact of Avicenna’s philosophy

    Abstract: „Menschenwürde“ ist ein in Recht und Moral gleichermaßen prominenter Begriff. Nach der deutschen Verfassungsordnung sind alle staatlichen Akte, die in die Menschenwürde eingreifen, rechtswidrig und rechtlich unwirksam. Umso problematischer ist es, dass das Konzept in Recht und Moral nach wie vor kontrovers beurteilt wird; insbesondere die Definition von „Menschenwürde“ ist umstritten. In der Literatur wurde unter Berufung auf den bekannten israelischen Philosophen Avishai Margalit vorgeschlagen, eine Menschenwürdeverletzung als (schwere) Demütigung zu interpretieren. Dieser Vorschlag wird im vorliegenden Band eingehend diskutiert. Dabei werden Geschichte und juristische Bedeutung des Menschenwürdegedankens ebenso beleuchtet wie seine Rolle in der sich herausbildenden europäischen Rechtsordnung und seine durchaus heterogenen philosophischen Dimensionen. Es unterliegt keinem Zweifel, dass mit der „Demütigung“ ein wesentliches Element jeder Menschenwürdeverletzung angesprochen wird.     Abstract: "Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht das Gerichtsverfahren gegen Wilhelm Harster vor dem Münchener Landgericht wegen Beihilfe zum Mord in 82.854 Fällen. Als Befehlshaber der Sicherheitspolizei in Den Haag war er an maßgeblicher Stelle mitverantwortlich für die Deportation eines Großteils der niederländischen Juden. Mitangek-lagt waren Wilhelm Zoepf, der Harster ehemals direkt unterstellte Leiter des Haager "Judenreferates", sowie die dort angestellte Gertrud Slottke. Die Darstellung setzt zunächst die Biographien der Beschuldigten in den Zusammenhang von Generation und Weltanschauung und verortet dann ihre jeweiligen Verantwortung für die Deportationen in der Struktur der deutschen Verwaltung in den besetzten Niederlanden. Dabei wird die zeitgenössische Forschungsperspektive der 1960er Jahre auch mit dem aktuellen geschichtswissenschaftlichen Erkenntnishorizont abgeglichen. Resümierend stellt der Autor dieses erste Verfahren gegen einen sogenannten Schreibtischtäter in den Kontext der "Bewältigungsgeschichte" der jungen Bundesrepublik Deutschland."

    Abstract: Main description: Der Staatssekretär im Reichsministerium des Innern Wilhelm Stuckart (1902-1953) war einer der wichtigsten juristischen Interpreten und Legitimatoren des NS-Staates. Als Mit-Autor der Nürnberger Rassegesetze goss er dessen biologistische Grundlagen in Gesetze und begleitete später die Vorbereitungen zum Genozid. Im Frühjahr 1942 vertrat er auf der Endlösungskonferenz am Wannsee sein Ressort. Nach dem Krieg gehörte Stuckart zu den Schöpfern der Legende von der "sauberen Verwaltung", die sich den rassistischen Ansprüchen der NS-Machthaber widersetzt habe. Die biographische Auseinandersetzung mit Stuckart belegt nicht nur die prägende Funktion von führenden Juristen in der NS-Verwaltung, sie untersucht auch die Rolle der Innenverwaltung und ihre Mitwirkung am Genozid.

    Abstract: Emil L. Fackenheim: Philosopher, Theologian, Jew is a scholarly tribute to Fackenheim’s memory. Fackenheim’s combination of erudition and generosity served to inspire a lifetime of philosophical inquiry, and a number of his students are represented in this volume. The volume, in order to provide a forum through which to introduce his thought to a broader audience, covers a wide spectrum of Fackenheim’s work including biographical, philosophical, and theological aspects of his thought that have not been addressed adequately in the past. Elie Wiesel, a close personal friend to Fackenheim for over 30 years, has provided the Foreword for the volume
