    Abstract: Hansestädtische Handelsfirmen profitierten von der Beteiligung an der deutschen Besatzung Polens während des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Zahlreiche Hamburger und Bremer Überseehandelsfirmen engagierten sich in der Besatzungswirtschaft des Generalgouvernements. Sie beteiligten sich zum einen an der brutalen Ausbeutung der polnischen Landwirtschaft. Zum anderen trugen sie dazu bei, die polnischen Jüdinnen und Juden auszurauben und wirtschaftlich zu verdrängen - ein wichtiger Schritt auf dem Weg zum Genozid. Die Kaufleute erhielten nicht nur einen Teil des Raubguts. Sie füllten auch die volkswirtschaftliche Lücke aus, die durch die Vernichtung der jüdischen Gemeinden entstand. Viele waren bis 1939 im Kolonialhandel tätig gewesen und rechtfertigten ihr Tun in Polen mit kolonialistischen und antisemitischen Deutungsmustern. Das für die hansestädtischen Unternehmen sehr profitable Geschäft bildete ein wesentliches Element der verbrecherischen deutschen Besatzung in Polen. Eine zentrale Rolle spielten dabei die Handelskammern Hamburgs und Bremens, die den »Osteinsatz« ihrer Kaufleute mit vorantrieben. Felix Matheis beleuchtet die bislang kaum bekannte Geschichte der lukrativen Zusammenarbeit zwischen hanseatischen Wirtschaftseliten und nationalsozialistischen Besatzungsbehörden.

    Abstract: Providing a comprehensive and engaging account of World War II remembrance and memory politics in East-Central and Eastern Europe this volume uses a comparative approach to examine the phenomena of cultural memory in a pan-European overview. Ranging in scope from various post-Soviet states such as Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, and Georgia to the East-Central and South-Eastern European post-socialist countries of Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, and Croatia, this book provides new insights into the ways in which World War II remembrance is reflected in the memory politics, historical studies, culture and literature of the respective countries. The volume focuses mostly on state memory narratives and their public reception as well as museums, memorials and monuments as controversial objects of cultural memory

    Abstract: "This volume presents the culmination of research on an almost ignored literary corpus: the translations into literary Italian of classical Hebrew texts made by Jews between 1550 and 1650. It includes dozens of poetical and philosophical texts and wisdom literature as well as dictionaries and biblical translations produced in what their authors viewed as a national tongue, common to Christians and Jews. In so doing, the authors/translators explicitly left behind the so-called Judeo-Italian. With contributions from an international team of scholars, whose essays were specially commissioned for this volume, it covers the long history of antisemitism starting with ancient Greece and Egypt, through the anti-Judaism of early Christianity, and the medieval era in both the Christian and Muslim worlds when Jews were defined as 'outsiders,' especially in Christian Europe. This portrayal often led to violence, notably pogroms that often accompanied Crusades, as well as to libels against Jews. The volume also explores the roles of Luther and the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the debate over Jewish emancipation, Marxism, and the social disruptions after World War 1 that led to the rise of Nazism and genocide. Finally, it considers current issues, including the dissemination of hate on social media and the internet and questions of definition and method.

    Abstract: Dina Porat präsentiert erstmals umfassend die Geschichte von 50 jungen Frauen und Männern, die als Untergrundkämpfer in Osteuropa die Schoa überlebten und nach dem Krieg beschlossen, sechs Millionen Deutsche zu töten. Angeführt von dem bewunderten Dichter und Partisanen Abba Kovner, wollten sie sich an der Nation rächen, die sie für die Ermordung von sechs Millionen Juden verantwortlich machten. Die Welt sollte sehen, dass jüdisches Blut nicht ungestraft vergossen werden dürfe. Auf Grundlage einer Fülle von Zeugenaussagen und von Quellen, die bisher in Archiven, in Broschüren oder in den Häusern der ehemaligen Mitglieder der Nakam-Gruppe verborgen lagen, wird das Geschehen in vielen erstaunlichen Einzelheiten ans Licht der Öffentlichkeit gebracht. The next section is on authors and places of publication addressing such diverse topics as a much republished book opposed to gambling, authors of books on philology and on the massacres of tah-ve-tat (1648-49); of articles on diverse and disparate places of printing, Chierie, Hamburg, Offenbach, Verona, and Slavuta, generally small barely remembered publishers of interesting works, and in the last location properly identifying the printer of the highly regarded Slavuta press. Included is a section on Christian-Hebraism with articles on Altdorf where polemical books were published and another on William Wotten, a Christian vicar who published the first English translation of Mishnayot. The result is a wide-ranging series of articles highlighting the activities of early Hebrew presses and printers"--

    Abstract: "In Émigré Voices Lewkowicz and Grenville present twelve oral history interviews with men and women who came to Britain as Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria in the late 1930s. Many of the interviewees rose to great prominence in their chosen career, such as the author and illustrator Judith Kerr, the actor Andrew Sachs, the photographer and cameraman Wolf Suschitzky, the violinist Norbert Brainin, and the publisher Elly Miller. The narratives of the interviewees tell of their common struggles as child or young adult refugees who had to forge new lives in a foreign country and they illuminate how each interviewee dealt with the challenges of forced emigration and the Holocaust. The voices of the twelve interviewees provide the reader with a unique and original source, which gives direct access to the lived multifaceted experience of the interviewees and their contributions to British culture"--

Eva Gruberová und Helmut Zeller sind durch Deutschland gereist und haben zugehört - von Rostock über Berlin bis Dortmund und nach München, mit einem Abstecher nach Wien. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Juden hierzulande kein normales Leben führen können, es sei denn, man hält Polizei und Sicherheitszäune vor jüdischen Kindergärten, Brandanschläge auf Synagogen, oder perfide Witze für etwas, das zur deutschen Normalität gehört. Jüdinnen und Juden erleben Übergriffe und Anfeindungen auch aus muslimisch geprägten Milieus. Was aber viele nicht sehen: Antisemitismus kam und kommt aus der "bürgerlichen Mitte". Die Reportagen, Interviews und Analysen machen sichtbar, dass der Judenhass tief in der Gesellschaft verwurzelt ist - und uns alle angeht. Antisemitismus war in Deutschland auch nach 1945 nicht verschwunden. Dieses Buch macht in Reportagen, Interviews und Analysen sichtbar, wie tief er in der Gesellschaft verwurzelt ist.     Abstract: In the wake of the First World War and Russian Revolutions, Central Europeans in 1919 faced a world of possibilities, threats, and extreme contrasts. Dramatic events since the end of the world war seemed poised to transform the world, but the form of that transformation was unclear and violently contested in the streets and societies of Munich and Budapest in 1919. The political perceptions of contemporaries, framed by gender stereotypes and antisemitism, reveal the sense of living history, of 'fighting the world revolution', which was shared by residents of the two cities. In 1919, both revolutionaries and counterrevolutionaries were focused on shaping the emerging new order according to their own worldview. By examining the narratives of these Central European revolutions in their transnational context, Eliza Ablovatski helps answer the question of why so many Germans and Hungarians chose to use their new political power for violence and repression

    Abstract: During the first half of the twentieth century, nationalizing processes in Europe and Palestine reshaped observant Jewry into two distinct societies, ultra-Orthodoxy and national-religious Judaism. Tracing the dynamics between the two most influential Orthodox political movements of the period, from their early years through the founding of the State of Israel, Daniel Mahla examines the crucial role that religio-political entrepreneurs played in these developments. He frames the contest between non-Zionist Agudat Yisrael and religious-Zionist Mizrahi as the product of wide-ranging social and cultural struggles within Orthodox Judaism and demonstrates that at the core of their conflict lay deep tensions between rabbinic authority and political activism. While Orthodoxy's encounter with modern Jewish nationalism is often cast as a confrontation between religious and secular forces, this book highlights the significance of intra-religious competition for observant Jewry's transition to the age of the nation state and beyond

    Abstract: 'The Last Ghetto' is a social and cultural history of Terezín, or Theresienstadt, a transit ghetto for Central and Western European Jews prior to their deportation for murder in the East. It offers the first analytical case study of a Holocaust victim society that explains human behavior in extremis, and demonstrates how prisoners created new social hierarchies, reshaped their conceptions of family, and developed new loyalties. Based on extensive research in archives around the world and empathetic reading of victim testimonies, this history of everyday life in a prisoner society reveals the many forms of agency and adaptation in Nazi concentration camps and ghettos.

    Abstract: The German language holds an ambivalent and controversial place in the modern history of European Jews, representing different-often conflicting-historical currents. It was the language of the German classics, of German Jewish writers and scientists, of Central European Jewish culture, and of Herzl and the Zionist movement. But it was also the language of Hitler, Goebbels, and the German guards in Nazi concentration camps. The crucial role of German in the formation of Jewish national culture and politics in the late nineteenth century has been largely overshadowed by the catastrophic events that befell Jews under Nazi rule. German as a Jewish Problem tells the Jewish history of the German language, focusing on Jewish national movements in Central and Eastern Europe and Palestine/Israel. Marc Volovici considers key writers and activists whose work reflected the multilingual nature of the Jewish national sphere and the centrality of the German language within it, and argues that it is impossible to understand the histories of modern Hebrew and Yiddish without situating them in relation to German. This book offers a new understanding of the language problem in modern Jewish history, turning to German to illuminate the questions and dilemmas that largely defined the experience of European Jews in the age of nationalism

    Abstract: "In Living under the Evil Pope, Martina Mampieri presents the Hebrew Chronicle of Pope Paul IV, written in the second half of the sixteenth century by the Italian Jewish moneylender Benjamin Neḥemiah ben Elnathan (alias Guglielmo di Diodato) from Civitanova Marche. The text remained in manuscript for about four centuries until the Galician scholar Isaiah Sonne (1887-1960) published a Hebrew annotated edition of the chronicle in the 1930s. This remarkable source offers an account of the events of the Papal States during Paul IV's pontificate (1555-59). Making use of broad archival materials, Martina Mampieri reflects on the nature of this work, its historical background, and contents, providing a revised edition of the Hebrew text as well as the first unabridged English translation and commentary"--

    Abstract: In Greek Writers and Philosophers in Philo and Josephus Erkki Koskenniemi investigates how two Jewish writers, Philo and Josephus, quoted, mentioned and referred to Greek writers and philosophers. He asks what this tells us about their Greek education, their contacts with Classical culture in general, and about the societies in which Philo and Josephus lived. Although Philo in Alexandria and Josephus in Jerusalem both had the possibility to acquire a thorough knowledge of Greek language and culture, they show very different attitudes. Philo, who was probably admitted to the gymnasium, often and enthusiastically refers to Greek poets and philosophers. Josephus on the other hand rarely quotes from their works, giving evidence of a more traditionalistic tendencies among Jewish nobility in Jerusalem

    Abstract: Obwohl das Thema »Gedächtnis« Teil eines großen Diskurses innerhalb der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften ist, fehlt es bislang an einer Gedächtnistheorie, die einen echten epistemischen Nutzen für die Geschichtswissenschaft aufweist. Mit Hilfe der soziologischen Systemtheorie von Niklas Luhmann überträgt Juliane Reil konstruktive Ansätze aus den Theorien von Jan Assmann, Pierre Nora und Johannes Fried in ein integratives Modell von Gedächtnistheorie. Dabei wird das komplexe Zusammenspiel von Gedächtnisprozessen auf individueller und kollektiver Ebene anhand von prominenten Beispielen des praktischen Umgangs mit dem Holocaust (etwa den vielerorts gelegten »Stolpersteinen«) deutlich gemacht

    Abstract: Antisemitism is on the rise in Europe, sometimes manifesting in violent acts against Jews, but more commonly noticeable in everyday discourse. This innovative empirical study examines written examples of antisemitism in contemporary Germany. Drawing on 14,000 letters and e-mails sent between 2002 and 2012 to the Central Council of Jews in Germany and the Israeli embassy in Berlin, as well communications sent between 2010 and 2011 to Israeli embassies across Europe, the authors show how language plays a crucial role in activating antisemitism across a broad spectrum of social classes, investigate the role of emotions in antisemitic argumentation patterns, and analyze “anti-Israelism” as the dominant form of contemporary hatred of Jews

The theoretical approach of the book combines eventful sociology, path dependency, and institutional political economy. Grinberg argues that historical political events have been shaped not only by political and economic forces but also by resistance struggles of marginal and weaker social groups: organized workers, Palestinians, and Mizrachi Jews. Major turning points in history, like the Separation War in 1948, the military occupation in 1967, and the Oslo peace process in 1993, are explained in the context of previous social and economic resistance struggles that affected the political outcomes

    Abstract: The Prussian State Library and the Reichstauschstelle (Reich Exchange Office) were at the heart of a network responsible for reallocating vast quantities of printed works confiscated from ‘enemies of the Reich’ and persecuted Jews to academic libraries and other institutions in the Third Reich.     Abstract: Von 2006 bis 2009 führte die Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin gemeinsam mit der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft ein Forschungsprojekt zur mikrohistorischen Analyse der Erwerbungs- und Verteilungspolitik der Reichstauschstelle und der Preußischen Staatsbibliothek durch. Die Förderung durch die Thyssen-Stiftung und die Arbeitsstelle für Provenienzrecherche/-forschung machten das Projekt möglich. Ziel des Projektes war die umfassende Aufklärung der institutionellen Strukturen und bibliothekarischen Abläufe unter rechtlichen und finanziellen Aspekten sowie in Hinsicht auf die Handlungsspielräume der beteiligten Akteure und die politische Dimension der Vorgänge. Damit wurde zugleich eine Basis für die Recherchen nach NS-verfolgungsbedingt entzogenem Kulturgut in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin und anderen Bibliotheken gelegt. Die Preußische Staatsbibliothek und die Reichstauschstelle - eine aus der Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft hervorgegangene zentrale Dienstleistungseinrichtung zur Literaturversorgung, die dem Generaldirektor der Preußischen Staatsbibliothek in dem fraglichen Zeitraum unterstellt war - standen im Zentrum eines Netzwerkes, durch das erhebliche Mengen der bei so genannten Reichsfeinden und jüdischen Verfolgten beschlagnahmten Literatur an wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken und andere Einrichtungen im damaligen Deutschen Reich verteilt wurde. Die vorliegende Publikation erschließt den Themenkomplex 'Reichstauschstelle / Preußische Staatsbibliothek' handbuchartig und kann zukünftig als Referenzwerk für einschlägige Forschungsansätze zum Thema NS-Raubgut in anderen Institutionen dienen.     Abstract: The Economic History of European Jews attempts to make sense of the economic foundations of Jewish life in the different parts of late antique and early medieval Europe. In the first part Michael Toch describes the demographic arc, decline, subsequent rise, and spatial distribution of Jewish populations. This data is then broadened to include the range of economic activities. The second part analyses the actual share of Jews in different branches of the economy. This includes the idea of their pioneer role and the notion of an intercontinental network of Jewish commerce, the phenomenon of Jews in agriculture and entrepreneurship, gender roles and the household mode of production, and the difficult subject of the significance of minority status for economic activity, among other subjects. \'This is the most up-to-date scholarly reassessment of a century of both overly optimistic and occasionally negative interpretations of Jewish population and economic activities, a boon to students and researchers of the first millennium of the Jewish experience in Europe, and an interesting read for the general public.\' S.
