    Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

    Abstract: Sefaria is building the future of Jewish learning in an open and participatory way. We are building a free living library of Jewish texts and their interconnections, in Hebrew and in translation. Our scope is Torah in the broadest sense, from Tanakh to Talmud to Zohar to modern texts and all the volumes of commentary in between. Sefaria is created, edited, and annotated by an open community. Having digital texts enables us to create new, interactive interfaces for the Web, tablet and mobile which allow students and scholars around the world to freely learn and explore the interconnections among Torah texts. Judaism's core texts grew out of millennia-long conversations and arguments across generations. We envision creating an open space for ancient conversations to continue in new ways, with new participants, new questions, and new layers of dialogue

    Abstract: "Guided by awareness of the problematic relationship between polemical text and history, Opponents and Identity in Philippians seeks to establish a historical context for the letter to the Philippians. The study re-evaluates the relationship between Paul and the Jerusalem-based Christ-believing community from the time of the Jerusalem meeting and the Antioch incident. A more detailed analysis centers on how this relationship is reflected in Philippians. The book argues that Paul was continuously on problematic terms with the Jerusalem community, which means that they are the Jewish Christ-believing opponents referred to at several places in Philippians as well. With the help of the social identity approach (SIA), the book illustrates how Paul engages in identity formation through polemical rhetoric in his last letter"--

    Abstract: In The Jewish Question: History of a Marxist Debate , Enzo Traverso explores the causes and the forms of the encounter that took place, from the middle of the nineteenth century to the Holocaust, between the intelligentsia of a cosmopolitan minority and the most radical ideological current of Western modernity. From Karl Marx to the Frankfurt School, the 'Jewish Question' — to a set of problems related to emancipation and anti-Semitism, cultural assimilation and Zionism — raised significant controversies within Marxist theory. Enzo Traverso carefully reconstructs this intellectual debate that runs over more than a century, pointing out both its achievements and its blind alleys.     Abstract: Sabrina Schütz untersucht im vorliegenden Band die Vorstellungen von ›Nation‹ und ›Nationalismus‹ im frühen deutschen zionistischen Diskurs vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Im Fokus der Studie stehen eine Reihe von markanten politisch-ideologischen Themenfeldern und Schlüsseldebatten aus der zionistischen Wochenzeitung Jüdische Rundschau, die mit Konzepten der modernen Nationalismus- und Zionismusforschung sowie mit Ansätzen aus der postkolonialen Kritik untersucht werden. In enger Anlehnung an Homi K. Bhabhas Hybriditätstheorie geht die Autorin von der These aus, dass der deutsche Zionismus eine eigentümliche, ›hybride‹ Variante von Nationalismus entwickelte, die einerseits ausgiebig auf die Traditionsbestände des deutschen Nationalismus zurückgriff, und andererseits sich zugleich davon distanzierte. The present study explores concepts of ‘nation’ and ‘nationalism’ in early German Zionism before the First World War. Doing so, it focuses on a series of crucial issues and keynote debates in the contemporary Zionist press, particularly in the prominent Zionist newspaper Jüdische Rundschau. The introduction adapts current theories of Zionism, nationalism and postcolonial studies so as to provide a methodological framework of analysis for Diaspora Zionism. It argues that German Zionism is best understood in line with Homi K. Bhabha’s notion of hybridity as it was characterized by a close affinity to various forms of German nationalism, while, at the same time, by its own distinctive – albeit contradictory or counternarrative – transformations of these adapted ideas.

    Abstract: Im Zuge des cultural turn wurde auch in der alttestamentlichen Wissenschaft die Nahrungsaufnahme auf ihre symbolischen Aspekte, kulturellen und historischen Kontexte hin untersucht. Dabei konzentrierte sich die Forschung auf die Darstellung von "realen" Mahlzeiten in der erzählten Welt. Die im Kontext der apokalyptischen Tradition imaginierten künftigen Mähler in der Kommenden Welt wurden bislang nur sporadisch behandelt und weder zusammenfassend noch systematisch dargestellt. An diesem Forschungsdesiderat setzt die vorliegende Arbeit an. Methodisch knüpft sie an den sozialwissenschaftlichen Diskurs zu Ritualen an und adaptiert diesen auf biblische und außerbiblische Texte. Gezeigt wird, dass das Mahl in der Kommenden Welt eine, aber nicht die einzige literarische Möglichkeit war, die Zukunft zu imaginieren. Obwohl es vier prominente Hauptthemen gibt, erscheint die Idee vom imaginierten Mahl als eine Art Angebot, deren Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten von den antiken Autoren individuell angepasst wurden. Deutlich wird immer, dass imaginierte Mahlrituale Projektionsflächen sind, in denen alle Hoffnungen der unvollkommenen Gegenwart in genussvollem endzeitlichen Speisen erfüllt werden.

    Abstract: This book is the completest work about life and works of Joseph Penso de Vega, the most prominent author of the Jewish Community of Amsterdam in the XVIIth century. This volume presents a very interdisciplinary study, because of the frequent contacts that the writer had among diasporas and the cultural relationship with Christians and laics. That meant a very intense cultural and literary exchange that Penso knew to represent it in his texts. In this sense, this study offers a very exact portrait –never made before–, not only about his cultural production but also about him as nexus between diasporas concerning religious aspects, History of culture and history of ideas, aspects ignored before but basics to understand his works.

    Abstract: S. C. Daley’s book, The Textual Basis of English Translations of the Hebrew Bible , moves us beyond existing uncertainties about the textual basis of modern Bible translations to a fresh understanding of the text-critical constitution of well-known English translations of the past four hundred years. Most translations depart from the Masoretic Text selectively, and in-depth analysis of their textual decisions leads (1) to the identification of distinct periods in the textual history of the English Bible, (2) to a classification of the translations by eclectic type, and (3) to the observation that each translation is ultimately unique from a text-critical perspective.     Abstract: In Essen im antiken Judentum und Urchristentum untersucht Christina Eschner die Auseinandersetzungen zum jüdischen Gesetz innerhalb des Urchristentums vor dem Hintergrund vergleichbarer Diskurse im antiken Judentum. Ziel ist es, die urchristliche Praxis des Gesetzes in ihrem größeren Kontext darzustellen und ihr gegebenenfalls einen bestimmten Platz im facettenreichen Bild der zeitgenössischen jüdischen Strömungen zuzuweisen. Dabei finden Schriften aus Qumran, dem griechischsprachigen und dem rabbinischen Judentum Berücksichtigung. Der Fokus liegt auf Vorschriften zu verbotenen Speisen, zur Tischgemeinschaft und zur erlaubten Art und Weise der Nahrungsaufnahme. Auch pagane Traditionen werden einbezogen. Damit ist diese Studie besonders interdisziplinär ausgerichtet. Sie bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen Themenfeldern der neutestamentlichen Wissenschaft, der Altphilologie, der Alten Geschichte und der Judaistik. Sie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die urchristlichen Diskurse zum Essen nicht auf eine vollständige Abschaffung der entsprechenden jüdischen Gesetzesanordungen zielen. In Essen im antiken Judentum und Urchristentum Christina Eschner examines the Early Christian disputes about the Jewish law against the background of Ancient Jewish discourses on commands of the law, in order to situate the Early Christian practice of the law within its broader context. Jewish sources include the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish writings in Greek and early rabbinic texts. This study focusses on rules concerning prohibited food, table fellowship and the permissible way of food intake. Pagan traditions are also considered. Thus, the work has an interdisciplinary orientation, discussing issues at the junction of New Testament studies, Classics, Ancient History and Jewish studies. It concludes that Early Christian food discourses do not aim for the complete abolition of the law

    Abstract: In The Jerusalem Temple in Diaspora, Jonathan Trotter shows how different diaspora Jews’ perspectives on the distant city of Jerusalem and the temple took shape while living in the diaspora, an experience which often is characterized by complicated senses of alienation from and belonging to an ancestral homeland and one’s current home.     Abstract: In A Stake in the Ground , Michael Schraer explores the economic functions of real estate amongst the Jews of the medieval crown of Aragon. He challenges the view of medieval Jews as primarily money-lenders and merchants, finding compelling evidence for extensive property trading and investment. Jews are found as landlords to Christian tenants, transferring land in dowries, wills and gifts. Property holdings were often extremely valuable. For some, property was a major part of their asset portfolios. Whilst many property transactions were linked to the credit boom, land also acted as a liquid and tradeable investment asset in its own right. This is a key contribution to the economic history of medieval Iberia and of medieval Jews

    Abstract: Despite scholars’ ongoing historical and sociological investigations into the ancient family, the right and the status of the firstborn son have been rarely explored by NT scholars, and this topic has not attracted the careful attention that it deserves. This work offers a study of the meaning of the firstborn son in the New Testament paying specific attention to the concept of primogeniture in the Old Testament and Jewish literature. This study argues that primogeniture was a unique institution in Jewish society, and that the title of the firstborn son indicates his access to the promise of Israel, and is associated with the right of the inheritance (i.e., primogeniture) including the Land and the special status of Israel

    Abstract: This research deals with R. Zadok's innovative writings. According to most scholars R. Zadok continues the doctrine of his rabbi R. Mordechai Yosef Leiner of Izbica and introduces existential fatalism: man has the freedom to act against the customary law, according to God's will which is revealed in his heart, even in his passions, which exceed the Halacha; however, man does not determine the will that is revealed in the root of his soul, but only uncovers it. Many expressions, in content and form, of this fatalism can be found in R. Zadok's writings; yet, he also introduces many remarks about human free choice and its creative power to establish and determine man's root and re-establish and influence the Divine worlds and this world. This research focuses on these passages whose centrality has been so far neglected by research. Hence, its renewed understanding of his doctrine. R. Zadok's position can be explained by means of the paradoxical perception, which claims the full strength of the two opposites and even a mutual influence…

    Abstract: "Converts in the Dead Sea Scrolls examines the meaning of the term gēr in the Dead Sea Scrolls. While often interpreted as a resident alien, this study of the term as it is employed within scriptural rewriting in the Dead Sea Scrolls concludes that the gēr is a Gentile convert to Judaism. Contrasting the gēr in the Dead Sea Scrolls against scriptural predecessors, Carmen Palmer finds that a conversion is possible by means of mutable ethnicity. Furthermore, mutable features of ethnicity in the sectarian movement affiliated with the Dead Sea Scrolls include shared kinship, connection to land, and common culture in the practice of circumcision. The sectarian movement is not as closed toward Gentiles as has been commonly considered"--

    Abstract: Die Autorin vergleicht die Handlungsmöglichkeiten und Sprechweisen im ländlich geprägten Umfeld der drei Konzentrationslager Bergen-Belsen, Esterwegen und Moringen. Im Fokus steht das Verhältnis zwischen Personal, Insassen und Anwohnern. Dass die Lager nicht abgeschottet, sondern Teil der NS-Gesellschaft waren, verdeutlicht die Analyse der ökonomi-schen Beziehungen, der physischen Gewalt, der Konfliktpotentiale und Gewöhnungseffekte sowie ihrer gezielten Zurschaustellung für die Öffentlichkeit. Dabei bewegten sich die lokalen Akteure zwischen Zustimmung und Mit-machen, Distanzierung und Verweigerung. Die Studie hebt außerdem die Bedeutung des Lokalen für die erinnerungspolitischen Debatten nach 1945 hervor.

    Abstract: »Deutsche Staatschefs und deutsche Botschafter in Moskau kamen und gingen - aber Gustav Hilger blieb.« - Mit diesen Worten umschrieb Stalin jenen Mann, dessen Biografie im Mittelpunkt von Jörn Happels Studie steht. Als Experte, Diplomat und Dolmetscher war der gebürtige Moskauer von 1918 bis 1941 aus den deutsch-sowjetischen Beziehungen nicht wegzudenken. Er beriet zahlreiche Politiker und Wirtschaftsvertreter und übersetzte für Stalin und Molotov, Hitler und Ribbentrop. Ab 1941 arbeitete Hilger in Berlin als Ost-Experte gegen die Sowjetunion; diese Tätigkeit setzte er nach dem Krieg für die USA fort. Ab 1953 erklärte er im bundesdeutschen Auswärtigen Amt die Politik in Osteuropa. Folgt man der Perspektive Hilgers, kann die Position der Sowjetunion im 20. Jahrhundert in einer deutsch-sowjetisch-amerikanischen Verflechtungsgeschichte neu bestimmt werden. Seine Biografie eröffnet unerwartete Perspektiven auf die internationale Politik des 20. Jewish-Christian Grass Root Initiatives in Germany and Austria after 1945] From a doctrine of contempt to a doctrine of respect: After 1945 Christian churches had to confront their own anti-Jewish tradition and recognized their complicity for the shoah. The Jewish-Christian Dialogue is one significant result of that shift in mindset. In Germany and Austria, Jewish-Christian discussion initiatives based on the Hebrew Bible - a common document of faith shared by both Judaism and Christianity - were established in the first decades of the post-war period. This monography concentrates on four such dialogue initiatives, and the genesis and development of these dialogue-based educational formats and their reception of the Bible are analysed. The qualitative study grants dialogue-participants ample space for their perceptions und experiences.

    Abstract: In Style and Context of Old Greek Job , Marieke Dhont offers a new understanding of the linguistic and stylistic diversity in the Septuagint corpus. To this end, the author innovatively uses Polysystem Theory, which has been developed in the field of modern literary studies. After discussing the appropriateness of a systemic approach to understanding Jewish-Greek literature, the author reflects on the Jewishness of Greek-language texts. Dhont then presents a thorough literary analysis of the Old Greek version of the book of Job. On this basis, she explains the dynamics that produced the translation of Old Greek Job and its position within the development of a Jewish-Greek literary tradition

    Abstract: In Hebrews and the Temple Philip Church argues that the silence of Hebrews concerning the temple does not mean that the author is not interested in the temple. He writes to encourage his readers to abandon their preoccupation with it and to follow Jesus to their eschatological goal. Following extensive discussions of attitudes to the temple in the literature of Second Temple Judaism, Church turns to Hebrews and argues that the temple is presented there as a symbolic foreshadowing of the eschatological dwelling of God with his people. Now that the eschatological moment has arrived with the exaltation of Christ to the right hand of God, preoccupation with the temple and its rituals must cease

    Abstract: Jewish Love Magic: From Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages is the first monograph dedicated to the supernatural methods employed by Jews in order to generate love, grace or hate. Examining hundreds of manuscripts, often unpublished, Ortal-Paz Saar skillfully illuminates a major aspect of the Jewish magical tradition. The book explores rituals, spells and important motifs of Jewish love magic, repeatedly comparing them to the Graeco-Roman and Christian traditions.     Abstract: The New Babylonian Diaspora: Rise and Fall of Jewish Community in Iraq, 16th–20th Centuries C.E. provides a historical survey of the Iraqi Jewish community's evolution from the apex of its golden age to its disappearance, emergence, rapid growth and annihilation. Making use of Judeo-Arabic newspapers and archives in London, Paris, Washington D.C. and other sources, Zvi Yehuda proves that from 1740 to 1914, Iraq became a lodestone for tens of thousands of Jewish immigrants from Kurdistan, Persia, the Mediterranean Basin, and Eastern and Central Europe. After these Jews had settled in Baghdad and Mesopotamia, they became “Babylonians” and ‘forgot’ their lands of origin, contrary to the social habit of Jews in other communities throughout history

    Abstract: Der argentinische Schriftsteller Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986) gilt als ein Literat, der bereits in seinen Werken der 30er und 40er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts Strukturen geschaffen hat, die später die Postmoderne prägen sollten. Foucault hat sich auf ihn berufen. Borges Erzählungen sind insbesondere von intertextuellen Bezugnahmen und sich in Paradoxien verstrickende Narrative durchzogen. Die Folge ist ein dezentrierter sowie dialogisierender Text, der keine eindeutige Aussage hervorbringt, sondern in einer vielstimmigen und unabgeschlossenen Textauslegung zur Wirkung kommt. Die vorliegende Studie stellt zur Diskussion, ob ein wesentlicher Grund für Borges’ innovatives, die literarische Postmoderne prägendes Textkonzept darin gesehen werden kann, dass sich der argentinische Schriftsteller nachweislich mit jüdischer Schriftkultur auseinandergesetzt hat. Geht man davon aus, dass die in jüdischer Tradition kultivierte mehrschichtige Textdeutung zugleich einen permanenten, unendlichen Rezeptionsprozess zur Folge hat wird deutlich, dass diese Tradition nicht nur kompatibel zu Borges’ Literatur ist, sondern auch zahlreiche Reflexionen in der modernen Literatur und Literaturforschung angeregt hat.

    Abstract: Mit 23 Jahren verließ die Jüdin Hilde Domin 1932 mit ihrem späteren Ehemann Deutschland. Nach einer langen Odyssee durch Europa und einem 12 Jahre währenden Exil in der Dominikanischen Republik kehrte sie 1954 in ihre Heimat zurück. In einer schweren Lebenskrise begann sie zu schreiben, ihr erster Gedichtband erschien 1959. In Deutschland wurde sie von fast allen Kritikern und Dichterkollegen euphorisch gefeiert. Das Lesepublikum war begeistert. Der vorliegende Band zeichnet die zeitgenössische Rezeption Hilde Domins nach und untersucht sowohl das lyrische Werk als auch ihre poetologischen Essays. Beide bilden insofern eine Einheit, als das künstlerische Werk Ausgangspunkt für die kunsttheoretischen Überlegungen ist. Seit Beginn der 70er Jahre wendete sich Hilde Domin mit Resolutionen, Aufrufen, kritischen Leserbriefen der gesellschaftlich/politischen Situation der Bundesrepublik zu, Gedichte schrieb sie kaum noch. Trotzdem hat ihre Lyrik bis heute nichts von ihrer Wirkung verloren. Worin diese besteht und was die lyrischen Texte noch so aktuell macht, wird ebenfalls in diesem Band verdeutlicht.

Religion als gefühltes, den Alltag prägendes Selbstverständnis bestimmt Grundhaltungen, Verstehensmuster, Bindungen und Handlungsimpulse. Für die Erziehung zu Religion werden im christlichen wie im jüdischen Kontext biblische Texte und Tradition vermittelt. Ausgewählte Beispiele geben Einblick in die Erziehungswelt jüdischer Kinder. Sie regen an, vertraute biblische Figuren einmal ganz anders zu betrachten und in weitgehend unbeachteten Texten der christlichen Bibel jüdische Texte voll Leben zu sehen. Dabei wird in Reflexion der eigenen Tradition christlichen Lesern jüdisches Selbstverständnis und jüdische Lebensweise nahegebracht. Durch den vergleichenden Blick ist dies ein Buch für christliche wie für jüdische LeserInnen

    Abstract: "In Hebrew Lexical Semantics and Daily Life in Ancient Israel, Kurtis Peters hitches the world of Biblical Studies to that of modern linguistic research. Often the insights of linguistics do not appear in the study of biblical Hebrew, and if they do, the theory remains esoteric. Peters finds a way to maintain linguistic integrity and yet simplify cognitive linguistic methods to provide non-specialists an access point. By employing a cognitive approach one can coordinate the world of the biblical text with the world of its surroundings. The language of cooking affords such a possibility - Peters evaluates not only the words or lexemes related to cooking in the Hebrew Bible, but also the world of cooking as excavated by archaeology"--

    Abstract: Im neunten Band der Reihe geht Ansgar Martins kabbalistischen Spuren in der Philosophie Theodor W. Adornos (1903–1969) nach. Der Frankfurter Gesellschaftskritiker griff im Rahmen seines radikalen materialistischen Projekts gleichwohl auch auf ‚theologische‘ Deutungsfiguren zurück. Vermittelt durch den gemeinsamen Freund Walter Benjamin (1892–1940) stieß Adorno dabei auf das Werk des Kabbala-Forschers Gershom Scholem (1897–1982). Zwischen Frankfurt und Jerusalem entwickelte sich eine lebenslange Korrespondenz. Für Adorno erscheint vor dem Hintergrund lückenloser kapitalistischer Vergesellschaftung jede religiöse Sinngebung in der Moderne als unmöglich. Der Tradition der jüdischen Mystik schreibt er hingegen eine innere Affinität zu dieser hoffnungslosen Logik des ‚Verfalls‘ zu. Sie scheint ihm zur unumgänglichen Säkularisierung religiöser Gehalte aufzufordern. Adornos kabbalistische Marginalien beziehen einen breiten Horizont jüdisch-messianischer Ideen ein. Er verleugnet dabei nie, dass es ihm um eine sehr diesseite Verwirklichung geoffenbarter Heilsversprechen zu tun ist: Transzendenz sei als erfüllte Immanenz, als verwirklichte Utopie zu denken. In diesem Anliegen sieht Adorno selbst jedoch gerade seine Übereinstimmung mit der Kabbala. Adornos kabbalistische Motive, die auf Scholems Forschungen zurückgehen, werden hier ausführlich an seinen Schriften und Vorlesungen untersucht. In seinem Verständnis der philosophischen Tradition sowie im Modell der Metaphysischen Erfahrung suchte er etwa explizit Anschluss an Deutungen der Kabbala: Das unerreichbare Urbild der Philosophie sei die Interpretation der geoffenbarten Schrift. Wie säkularisierte heilige Texte wurden Werke von Beethoven, Goethe, Kafka oder Schönberg so zum Anlass für ‚mystische‘ Interpretationen. Deren detaillierte Untersuchung erlaubt, das viel beschworene jüdische Erbe von Adornos Philosophie zu konkretisieren und bedenkenswerte Einzelheiten von der Negativen Dialektik zur Ästhetik in den Blick zu nehmen.

    Abstract: The Jews of Modern France: Images and Identities synthesizes much of the original research on modern French Jewish history published over the last decade. Themes include Jewish self-representation and discursive frameworks, cultural continuity and rupture from the eve of emancipation to the contemporary period, and the impact of France's role as a colonial power. This volume also explores the overlapping boundaries between the very categories of \'Jewish\' and \'French.\' As a whole, this volume focuses on the shifting boundaries between inner-directed and outer-directed Jewish concerns, behaviors, and attitudes in France over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Contributors highlight the fluidity of French Jewish identity, demonstrating that there is no fine line between communal insider and outsider or between an internal and external Jewish concern

    Abstract: In Ontological Aspects of Early Jewish Anthropology , Tyson L. Putthoff explores early Jewish beliefs about how the human self reacts ontologically in God’s presence. Combining contemporary theory with sound exegesis, Putthoff demonstrates that early Jews widely considered the self to be intrinsically malleable, such that it mimics the ontological state of the space it inhabits. In divine space, they believed, the self therefore shares in the ontological state of God himself. The book is critical for students and scholars alike. In putting forth a new framework for conceptualising early Jewish anthropology, it challenges scholars to rethink not only what early Jews believed about the self but how we approach the subject in the first place

    Abstract: In Nuptial Symbolism in Second Temple Writings, the New Testament and Rabbinic Literature , André Villeneuve examines the ancient Jewish concept of the covenant between God and Israel, portrayed as a marriage dynamically moving through salvation history. This nuptial covenant was established in Eden but damaged by sin; it was restored at the Sinai theophany, perpetuated in the Temple liturgy, and expected to reach its final consummation at the end of days. The authors of the New Testament adopted the same key moments of salvation history to describe the spousal relationship between Christ and the Church. In their typological treatment of these motifs, they established an exegetical framework that would anticipate the four senses of Scripture later adopted by patristic and medieval commentators

    Abstract: Jewish Books and their Readers discusses the transformative effect of the circulation and readership of sacred and secular texts written by Jews on Christian as well as Jewish readers in early modern Europe. Its twelve essays challenge traditional paradigms of Christian Hebraism and undermine simplistic visions of the unchanging nature of Jewish cultural life.They ask what constituted a ‘Jewish’ book: how it was presented, disseminated, and understood within both Jewish and Christian environments (and how its meanings were contested), and what effect such understanding had on contemporary views of Jews and their intellectual heritage. They demonstrate how the involvement of Christians in the production and dissemination of Jewish books played a role in the shaping of the intellectual life of Jews and Christians.     Abstract: In Exegeting the Jews: The Early Reception of the Johannine \'Jews\' , Michael G. Azar analyzes the rhetorical function of the Gospel of John’s \'Jews\' in the earliest surviving full-length expositions of John in Greek: Origen’s Commentary on John (3rd century), John Chrysostom’s Homilies on John (4th century), and Cyril of Alexandria’s Commentary on John (5th century). While scholarship often has portrayed the reception history ( Wirkungsgeschichte ) of the Gospel’s “Jews” as simply and uniformly anti-Jewish or antisemitic, Azar demonstrates that these three writers primarily read John’s narrative typologically, employing the situation and characters in the Gospel not against contemporary Jews with whom they regularly interacted, but as types of each patristic writer’s own intra-Christian struggle and opponents

    Abstract: "In The Danielic Discourse on Empire in Second Temple Literature, Alexandria Frisch asks: how did Jews in the Second Temple period understand the phenomenon of foreign empire? In answering this question, a remarkable trend reveals itself--the book of Daniel, which situates its narrative in an imperial context and apocalyptically envisions empires, was overwhelmingly used by Jewish writers when they wanted to say something about empires. This study examines Daniel, as well as antecedents to and interpretations of Daniel, in order to identify the diachronic changes in perceptions of empire during this period. Oftentimes, this Danielic discourse directly reacted to imperial ideologies, either copying, subverting, or adapting those ideologies. Throughout this study, postcolonial criticism, therefore, provides a hermeneutical lens through which to ask a second question: in an imperial context, is the Jewish conception of empire actually Jewish?"--

    Abstract: In Turning Proverbs towards Torah , Elisa Uusimäki offers the first monograph on the early Jewish wisdom text 4Q525 from Qumran. Following the reconstruction of the fragmentary manuscript, Uusimäki analyses the text with a focus on the reception and renewal of the Proverbs tradition and the ways in which 4Q525 illustrates aspects of Jewish pedagogy in the late Second Temple period. She argues that the author was inspired by Proverbs 1-9 but sought to demonstrate that true wisdom is found in the concept of torah. He also weaved dualistic elements and eschatological ideas into the wisdom frame. The author's intention, Uusimäki argues, is to form the audience spiritually, encouraging it to trust in divine protection and blessings that are bestowed upon the pious

    Abstract: This research concentrates on the investigation of the Responsa literature and the examination of attitudes of Jewish religious decisors towards artificial insemination (AI), as well as other reproductive technologies such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF), surrogacy and egg donation. The study attempts to elucidate the formation of Halacha on this question according to the Responsa literature starting from the Rishonim (the early authorities) period (11th till 15th centuries) and up to the Acharonim (the later authorities) period (from the 16th century and onwards), and concentrating primarily on the modern era and last century. The aim of this research is to examine the process of reasoning and decision making of religious authorities, dealing with the penetration of technological and scientific advancements into a closed and conservative society. Our analysis shows how rabbis are facing the conflict between medical and social necessity to access advanced medical treatments and fear of social transitions and religious implications, caused by such technologies. In addition to analysis of the Orthodox Responsa, this study surveys also the opinion of rabbis in Reform and Conservative Judaism.
    Abstract: מצוות הפריון הינה אחת מן המצוות החשובות ביהדות ומגדירה במובנים רבים את מהות קיומו של האדם היהודי הדתי. זוגות דתיים אשר סובלים מבעיית פריון נקרעים לא פעם בין מחוייבותם הדתית והלחץ החברתי בקהילתם לבין אי יכולתם להביא ילדים לעולם בדרך טבעית. החל מאמצע המאה ה 20- הפכו טכנולוגיות פריון רפואיות לנגישות לציבור הרחב בישראל ובעולם והובילו למהפכה חברתית אשר אפשרה לזוגות חשוכי ילדים להגשים את חלומם בפעם הראשונה ולהפוך להורים. פריצת דרך רפואית זו לא נעלמה מעיני הציבור הדתי על זרמיו השונים וגרמה לטלטלה בתפיסת עולמם של מנהיגיהם, אשר נדרשו לתת מענה הלכתי הולם המאזן בין רווחת קהילותיהם לבין שמירה על ערכי ומצוות הדת היהודית. על רקע תמורות אלו התפתח שיח הלכתי ואקדמי חשוב ומעניין באשר למקומה של טכנולוגיה מודרנית בחברה המתנהלת על פי קודים מסורתיים. עם זאת, הדיאלוג החי המתקיים בין מנהיגי היהדות לבין קהילותיהם, אשר מתועד כאוסף שאלות ותשובות (שו"ת) לבעיות הלכתיות אקטואליות בתחום הפריון, לא נחקר דיו. עבודתנו עוסקת במחקר ספרות השו"ת ובגישת פוסקי ההלכה להסתייעות בטכנולוגיית ההזרעה המלאכותית ובטיפולי פוריות חדשניים נוספים שהתפתחו בעקבותיה כגון הפריה חוץ גופית, פונדקאות ותרומת ביציות. העבודה סוקרת את התגבשות ועיצוב ההלכה בשאלה זו, כפי שעולה מספרות השו"ת החל מתקופת הראשונים (המאות ה 11- עד ה- 16 ) ועד לפוסקים מתקופת האחרונים (המאה ה- 16 ואילך), ומתמקדת בעיקר בתקופה המודרנית של המאה האחרונה. במרכז העבודה יעמדו מעמדם ההלכתי של האם והוולד בעקבות שימוש בהזרעה והפריה מלאכותית וכן השלכותיהן ההלכתיות של השימוש הרפואי בזרע. תרומתו של מחקר זה הינה בהצגת וניתוח התמודדות הפוסקים עם העימות הערכי וההלכתי שמעוררות תמורות במבנה המשפחה ובדפוסי הורות מסורתיים כתוצאה משימוש הולך וגובר בטכנולוגיות פריון מתקדמות בחברה המודרנית. יתר על כן, מחקר זה מרחיב את הדיון ההלכתי אל מעבר לעמדות הפוסקים ביהדות האורתודוקסית, הנצמדים לעקרונות ההלכה ההיסטורית, ומציג לראשונה אף את קשת הדעות של רבנים המשתייכים לזרמי היהדות המתקדמת והקונסרבטיבית, הדוגלים בפיתוח ההלכה והתאמתה למציאות החיים המשתנה. כך, מעניקה עבודת מחקר זו תמונה שלמה ומקיפה יותר באשר להתמודדות הרבנים עם שאלת ההזרעה המלאכותית ומציגה את רב גוניותה של ההלכה כפי שמשתקפת בזרמי היהדות השונים בישראל ובתפוצות.

In Abgrenzung zur These der Undarstellbarkeit der Shoah wird der Begriff der Sichtbarmachung nutzbar gemacht, um Prozesse und die Wirkung von Bildern im Zusammenhang mit Zeugenschaft herauszustellen. Ausgangspunkt dabei ist, dass bildliche Zeugnisse einen Gegenpol zu den standardisierten Visualisierungspraktiken der Shoah bieten, sprich dem historischen Bildmaterial aufgenommen durch die Alliierten und der Nationalsozialisten. In der Arbeit wird das historische Bildmaterial als Visualisierungspraxis problematisiert und visuellen Zeugnissen gegenübergestellt, die Augen- und Überlebenszeugen der Shoah, aber auch authentische Orte des Geschehens aus einer nachträglichen Perspektive zeigen.     Abstract: The study seeks to reconstruct the Jewish history of political experience during the period of socialism and the Cold War, as exemplified in Leipzig, the second largest city in the German Democratic Republic. It reveals that Jewish life in East Germany was not shaped solely by the formal Jewish Community (Gemeinde), but also by one’s affiliation with religious and political currents, such as Reform, Orthodoxy, Zionism, socialism and communism. The relationship of the SED party to Jewish citizens was not rigidly fixed; rather, it was characterized by a dynamic process and subject to continuous re-negotiation. Hendrik Niether demonstrates that despite the adversities of the Cold War and state repression, there was constant communication between Jews in Leipzig, emigrés from Leipzig and Jewish organizations in Western Europe, Israel and the United States. The experience of the Holocaust constituted an element of mutual understanding between these different groups. Meanwhile, the East German society’s interest in Jewish history and culture grew more pronounced as its attraction towards Antifascism ebbed away from the 1970s onward. This trend was tangible not only in ecclesial and oppositional circles, but also among political actors concerned with history and culture within the SED.

    Abstract: The Jewish community of the city of Kleczew came into existence in the sixteenth century. It remained large and strong throughout the next four hundred years, and in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it constituted 40-60% of the total population. The German army entered Kleczew on September 15, 1939, shortly after the outbreak of World War II. The communities of Kleczew and the vicinity were among the first Jewish collectives in Europe to be totally destroyed. The events presented in this book reveal that the organization of deportations and the methods of mass murder conducted in this district, by Kommando Lange, served as a model that would be applied later in the death camps during the mass extermination of Polish and European Jewry. If so, it was in the woods near Kleczew that the "Final Solution of the Jewish Question" began

Das Stereotyp des 'inauthentischen Juden' wird entlang der Geschichte des Christentums, vor allem des Protestantismus bis hin zu Wagners frühen musikalischen Schriften verfolgt. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden abschließend am Beispiel des jüdischen Komponisten Giacomo Meyerbeer konkretisiert

    Abstract: Zeev Levin seeks to provide a comprehensive picture of government efforts to socialize the Jewish masses in Uzbekistan, a process in which the central Soviet government took part, together with the local, republican and regional administrations and Soviet Jewish activists. This research presents a chapter in the history of the Jews in Uzbekistan, as well as contributing to the study of the socialization process of the Jewish population in the USSR in general. It also contributes to the study of relations among political and government bodies and decision makers. The study is based on archival documents and provides a unique glance at the implementation of Soviet nationalities policy towards Bukharan Jews while comparing it to other national minority groups in Uzbekistan
