Abstract:
Contends that scholars have created a distorted view of Nietzsche's attitudes toward Jews and Judaism, presenting him as a proto-Nazi. Examines his views in light of Nietzschean psychology and maintains that he persistently emphasized the prominent qualities of the Jew - vitality and love for life. Central to Nietzschean thought is the concept of "Macht" (power). Jews, as a result of being oppressed and persecuted, developed a psychological pattern of negative power - i.e. various forms of repressive behavior which, albeit, helped to generate the intellect. Nietzsche described the Jews as the most powerful race in Europe and urged them to revive the positive powers of the ancient Hebrews and to spearhead the spiritual renaissance of Europe. Speculates on Nietzsche's possible attitude toward Zionism which meant an end to suffering, the basis of the Jews' creative power, but also the reactivation of the values and patterns of life of the ancient Hebrews.
