Abstract: Documentary countering international claims of anti-Semitism, which aims to illustrate the satisfaction of Russian Jews living in the Jewish Autonomous Region
Abstract: The film opens with old newsreels showing the work of Jewish people to build a nation for themselves within the Soviet Union. It includes footage from the establishment of the capital Birobidjan in 1934. The narrator contrasts the old images of clearing land and agriculture with modern scenes of factories and urbanisation. There is an interview with a worker who tells of her happiness and equality, and with an American journalist invited to the city. Later in the film there is a section about the Second World War, and an interview with a Soviet war hero whose family were executed during the Holocaust; he now sits at the head of the Anti-Semitism Committee. The flourishing of the arts and music in the Jewish community is also considered, with particular focus on the violin; this section includes footage of violin lessons and an interview with a renowned Jewish musician. The celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Birobidjan mark the end of the film. The final claim made by the narrator is that the people of all the Soviet nations are now all Soviets, all equals in the same nation

Abstract: Feature film about the Kaufmans, a Jewish family living in Czechoslovakia during WWII, who are taken to Terezin (Theresienstadt), a transit base on the way to the extermination camps. [WARNING: contains scenes of dead bodies.]
Abstract: The film opens with documentary footage of Adolf Hitler and other high ranking Nazis, intercut with marching troops. On the same day that a Jewish optician is forced to resign, her colleague proposes. As Jews are banned first from attending the theatre, and then from holding jobs in the civil service, her family consider migrating to South America. Their attempts fail, and the elderly members of the family are deeply distressed when they are forced to wear a yellow star. The family host a wedding for the young couple and afterwards, a friend commits suicide to avoid his transportation to Terezin. Soon most of the family is transported; in one harrowing scene, the family file forward into the camp, while coffins are carried out. The grandfather dyes his hair to pass as a young man and in one memorable scene, the prisoners march through the rain past a morose band. Tony poses as a Jewish man to visit Terezin and when he returns finds his father and brother were arrested and "killed while escaping". He is arrested, off-screen, and his wife sent to Terezin. In a dramatic scene, the prisoners realise they are constructing a gas chamber when children transported from a different camp flee from the sight of showers. The film ends with jubilant scenes of liberation and the reunion of husband and wife at a cemetery

Abstract: This volume contains the proceedings of the Italia Judaica Jubilee Conference, held at Tel Aviv University 3-5 January, 2010, on the occasion of the jubilee celebration of outstanding scholarship on the history of Italian Jewry. Established in 1960 by Professor Shlomo Simonsohn and scholars from Israel and other countries, the Italia Judaica Project has sponsored documentation and research and organized international conferences, including some as part of the Israeli-Italian cultural agreement. The conference records the success of the project, exploring a broad range of topics related to the culture and history of the Jews in Italy in the Middle Ages and early modern times, such as: Jewish community, economy, literature, medicine and science, and the Arts. This volume contains nineteen of the twenty-seven lectures presented at the conference, including such topics as “International Trade and Italian Jews at the Turn of the Middle Ages,” “The Angevins of Naples and the Jews,” and “Dante and the Literary Identity of Jews in Italy.” The conference was organized by the Goldstein-Goren Diaspora Research Centre at Tel Aviv University, in cooperation with the Fred W. Lessing Institute for European History and Civilization, the Cymbalista Jewish Heritage Centre, the Faculty of Jewish Studies and the Golda and Israel Koschitzky Department of Jewish History at Bar-Ilan University, and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura

Abstract: The history of the Jews in Sicily covers a period of over a thousand years, from Antiquity to the Expulsion, based on some 40,000 archival records, most of them hitherto unpublished. It illustrates the political, legal, economic, social and religious vicissitudes of the Jewish minority and its relations with the surrounding majority of Romans, Moslems and Christians. While the antecedents of the Jewish presence on the island are shrouded in mystery, more and more historical records surface with the passage of time. Those become abundant toward the later Middle Ages. At that time the Jews in Sicily were citizens and suffered from relatively few disabilities. This was true in particular in the economic sphere. No discriminatory legislation forced them into moneylending and trade in old clothes. They engaged in agriculture and industry, trade and commerce, including international trade and shipping, and in most professions, which in turn enhanced their social status. There was as an unusually large number of craftsmen and physicians among them. The majority, however, were labourers, on the land and in town. In the fifteenth century the Jewish population reached 25,000 or thereabouts, over half of contemporary Italian Jewry. All this came to a sudden end with the expulsion order issued by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. Some 80% of the Jews went into exile, while the remainder converted to Catholicism, only to be caught in the net of the Spanish inquisition. \'This final volume of Simonsohn’s series provides readers with an excellent opportunity to obtain the gist of the scholarship in the previous volumes. Replete with tables detailing commodity prices, wages and salaries, marriage contracts, and demographics this work is an extremely informative and very readable description of the interaction between Jews and non-Jews in a not-so-closed society in the Middle Ages.\' Randall C. Abstract: This volume of the Documentary History of the Jews in Sicily is the eighteenth volume of the two series and concludes them. It is a monograph describing the last centuries of the Jewish presence on the island, under the rule of Aragon and Spain and a sequel to the Introduction at the beginning of volume one. It is based on the documents contained in vols 2-17 and illustrates the political, legal, economic, social and religious history of the Jewish minority and its relations with the Christian majority. The records show that the Jews in Sicily were citizens and suffered from relatively few disabilities. Some 80% of the Jews went into exile, while the remainder converted to Catholicism, only to be caught in the net of the Spanish inquisition. Abstract: Non-Sectarian Committee Minutes and Notes
Note: AMDigital Reference:P511/1/1/12 , Minutes', Notes, etc. 1939-1940 Non-Sectarian Committee - Minutes, Notes, etc. [All meetings take place at MEK's apartment, and almost all include Justine Wise Polier. Many of the meetings are made up almost entirely of women. There are interesting comments made about what kind of children they want to bring in. They also take great pains to ensure that this is a non-sectarian committee, so that Americans won't be upset and because it was easier to use non-Jewish workers in Europe.] 1. August 10, 1939 [meeting participants are all female] Justine Wise Polier very involved Have tried to get non-Jewish, non-Left groups to help Katherine Blackburn is the new Executive Secretary 2. May 22, 1939 Discussion of formation of official national child welfare group Page 5: remarks about a Dutch man in Vienna who arranges for the transportation of Jews out of concentration camps and prisons The Gestapo gives him money collected from Jews and he uses it to pay for their transportation Discussion of selection of children Discussion of 'the best child' to bring - MEK says that if there are two children, she would take 'the better child,' not the one with the most need To ensure that the children don't become public charges, pick the ones who will adapt the easiest, not the poorest children Want to make sure that general policies are adhered to, and that individual exceptions are few Discussion of selection and remuneration of workers MEK: 'Most social workers are not aggressive or they wouldn't be social workers' Some discussion of racial laws Discussion of the bill and hearings on it 3. December 10, 1939 Discussion of whether the greatest pressure is in England or Germany Refugee problem in England Discussion of whether Non-Sectarian Committee's efforts impede other organizations' efforts Value of group as non-sectarian - America is concerned about "More Jews, more Jews, more Jews" coming (p. 12) 4. January 15, 1939 Some anecdotes about attitudes of young Germans - they mainly agree with Hitler Includes summary of meetings They had encouraged Senator Wagner to create his bill 5. June 27, 1939 Includes discussion of what types of children to take [FH: NOTE - at this point I stopped taking notes on individual minutes. Late 1939 and early 1940 minutes discuss the formation of the Non-Sectarian Foundation] 6. April 29 (1939?) 7. April 11, 1939 8. March 27 (1939?) 9. Abstract: Non-Sectarian Foundation Plans for formation
Note: AMDigital Reference:P511/1/1/11 , Meeting 3/17/40, Plans for Formation of Non-Sectarian Foundation Meeting 3/17/40 at MEK's apartment, including many of the people who had been involved in the committee Incl. tribute to MEK as 'the person who has been the leader...with indomitableness and courage and energy' Update on the bill: it failed to pass, but by the time it got to that point, it had so many amendments that the NSCGRC was unsure about whether they wanted it passed They're starting a Non-Sectarian Foundation for Refugee Children (not GERMAN only) because the NSCGRC is too tied up with the Bill; the Foundation will organize funds to bring refugee children to U.S., even if it means only paying their steamship passage Honorary Vice Presidents would include Eleanor Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, Governor Lehman of NY, university presidents, a rabbi, bishops, ministers, etc. Already, before organization even started, raised $100,000-125,000 Testimonies by women who had been in Germany, presumably as social workers, on condition of children there and willingness of parents to send their children abroad DAR influential in defeating the Bill Many people are glad that the group is non-sectarian: 'I'm elated, therefore, Mr. Chairman, as an American and as a Jew, at the formation of this committee, over and above what it might accomplish for children, because of its implications in emphasizing that the problem of refugees isn't exclusively racial or anti-Jewish.' Statement by MEK: 'I'm just going to say a few words because I think that the inner men should be fed other than spiritually. What I want to say is that this meeting is only the culmination and crystallization of an idea that started in this room on Dec. 18, 1938, which will carry forward the ideals, the enthusiasm, the very real kind of cooperation which gave me a renewed faith in the things that human beings stood for. I never in my life have had the thrilling privilege before -- and I never need to have it again -- of realizing what this group has indicated to me that humans can get together and live and work as humans with no personal egos, no personal selfishness, no interest of a personal nature, but only a desire to help children.' , Marion E Kenworthy Papers , Reproduction of Non-Sectarian Foundation Plans for formation 1940 , American Jewish Historical Society
