    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, began his intellectual life with the Jewish Bible and also ended it with it. He began by reading the Philippson Bible together, especially with his father Jacob Freud, and ended by studying the figure of Moses. This study systematically traces this preoccupation and shows that the Jewish Bible was a constant reference for Freud and determined his Jewish identity. This is shown by analysing family documents, religious instruction and references to the Bible in Freud's writings and correspondence.

    Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert war geprägt von Völkermorden. Die literarische Auseinandersetzung im deutschsprachigen Raum beschränkte sich dabei lange Zeit auf den nationalsozialistischen Judenmord. Anknüpfend an Ansätze der vergleichenden Genozidforschung und der literarischen Aufarbeitung der Shoah zeigt Gerald Manstetten, dass mittlerweile auch andere Genozide in den literarischen Fokus genommen werden. Am Beispiel von neun deutschsprachigen Werken weist er diese Entwicklung ebenso nach wie den noch immer starken Einfluss der Shoah auf das Schreiben über Genozide in deutscher Sprache.

Dem Aufruf „An alle, die Deutschland vor und seit Hitler gut kennen“ folgend, berichtet Lichtenstein über sein Aufwachsen in Königsberg – unter dem Einfluss von Immanuel Kant –, über seine Studienzeit, die ihn zu einem begeisterten Anhänger von Martin Heidegger werden ließ, sowie – ab 1933 – über seine Tätigkeit als Arzt und die damit verbundenen Einschränkungen und Verfolgungen. Nach seiner Emigration in die USA wurde Lichtenstein zu einem renommierten Psychoanalytiker und Autor. Der zweite Teil des Buchs enthält Beiträge von Thomas Aichhorn, Detlef Garz, Norman Holland, Erwin Lichtenstein und Nicole Welter zu seiner Biographie und seinem weiteren wissenschaftlichen Werk.
    Abstract: The book focuses on the autobiographical manuscript written by the Jewish physician Heinz Lichtenstein (1904–1990) under the pseudonym Martin Andermann for the Harvard University 'prize competition' in 1939. Answering the call "To all who knew Germany well before and since Hitler," Lichtenstein recounts his growing up in Königsberg – under the influence of Immanuel Kant – his student days, which made him a follower of Martin Heidegger, as well as his work as a doctor and the restrictions and persecutions associated with it, which led to his emigration to the USA. In the U.S., Lichtenstein became a renowned psychoanalyst and author. The second part of the book is devoted to his further scientific work.

    Abstract: Die Gesetzesthematik ist im hebräischen Esterbuch omnipräsent. Einerseits erzählt es von einem Königreich, in dem es für fast alles ein Gesetz gibt. Andererseits wird die Ausrottung von Esters und Mordechais Volk damit begründet, dass es anderen als den königlichen Gesetzen folge. Trotz dieses Befundes fehlt eine umfassende Untersuchung zu Bedeutung und Funktion des Themas. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt sich dieser Aufgabe an. Unter Berücksichtigung von Motivkonstellationen und intertextuellen Bezügen bietet sie eine ausführliche Analyse dieser Erzählfassung, die Gott bekanntlich unerwähnt lässt. Die Analyse erlaubt den Schluss, dass insbesondere der Motivkomplex "König als Ordnungsinstanz" eine theologische Dimension einspielt, denn im Spiegel irdisch-königlicher Rechtsverdrehung gewinnen der wahre Gottkönig JHWH und seine Tora an Kontur. Schließlich bietet die Studie eine Einordnung der Erzählung als Beitrag zum Toradiskurs der vormakkabäischen hellenistischen Zeit

    Abstract: This volume contains an English translation of the Arabic translation and commentary on the book of Proverbs composed by one of the most acclaimed, innovative, and prolific exegetes of the Karaite “Golden Age” (10th –11th centuries), Yefet ben ʿEli ha-Levi. A critical edition and an extensive introduction was published by Ilana Sasson as vol. 1 (KTS 8) in 2016. Dr. Sasson worked for many years on an English translation of the work and, before her untimely death in 2017, passed her unfinished manuscript to the series editors. The translation was then completed, edited, and prepared for publication by Dr. Wechsler. Yefet’s commentary on Proverbs is a masterpiece of literary and rational-contextual analysis of one of the most difficult and important books of wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. His work is an invaluable link in the history of interpretation of the book of Proverbs

Zentrales Motiv dieser Lektüre ist die Hoffnung, die Benjamin im „Unfertigen und Ungeschickten“ der Figuren Kafkas verwahrt sieht. Das Buch geht diesem Motiv nach, indem es die Zusammenhänge zwischen sprachlichen und materiellen Bildern in den Fokus rückt. Die von Benjamin zur Deutung Kafkas herangezogenen Porträtbildnisse, Stummfilme, asiatischen und expressionistischen Gemälde werden eingehend untersucht. So gelingt der Nachweis, dass im Zentrum von Benjamins bildhaftem, vermeintlich esoterischem Kafka-Studium die Suche nach befreienden Momenten steht. Hundert Jahre nach Kafkas Tod und neunzig Jahre nach dem Erscheinen von Benjamins Kafka-Essay leistet Lees Studie damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Nachleben der Kafka-Texte Benjamins.

    Abstract: This book explores the way that the Torah was appreciated and interpreted as a text and symbol in Christian and Jewish sources from the Second Temple period through the Middle Ages. It tracks the development and complex interactions of three images of Torah— “God-like,” “Angelic,” and “Messianic”— which are found in late-antique Jewish and Christian materials as well as in medieval kabbalistic and Jewish philosophic sources. It provides a unique template for tracing the development of theological ideas related to the images of Torah and offers a sophisticated and innovative analysis of the relationship between mystical experience, theology, and phenomenology

    Abstract: Anti-Karl-May-Diskussionen überfallen den Menschen periodisch wie die Grippe. Obwohl der "herrliche sächsische Lügenbold" (Hermann Kant) schon vor über 100 Jahren in die "ewigen Jagdgründe" einging, bringt er nach wie vor Gemüter zum Kochen und Tastaturen zum Glühen. Im Sommer 2022 ging der Streit um den Schöpfer von Winnetou und Old Shatterhand, Kara Ben Nemsi und Hadschi Halef in eine neue Runde. Auslöser war die Verlagsrücknahme von Begleitpublikationen zum Kinderfilm "Der junge Häuptling Winnetou". Auch wenn der Film bis auf den Titel mit Karl May so viel zu tun hat wie eine Mozartkugel mit "Don Giovanni", brauchte es nur wenige Mausclicks, bis auch der Autor ins Kreuzfeuer geriet. Über Nacht schossen Karl-May-Spezialisten wie Pilze aus dem Boden. Sie fanden Überraschendes heraus: Rassist, gar Antisemit, ja sogar Inspirator und Ideenlieferant der SS, von Hitler und Himmler, sei der 1912 Verstorbene gewesen. Karl-May-Biograf Thomas Kramer, der seit Jahrzehnten zu May forscht und arbeitet, ist diesen Vorwürfen sachlich und unaufgeregt, dafür mit viel Humor nachgegangen. Sein Urteil fällt eindeutig aus.

    Abstract: "Although recently more studies have been devoted to the representations of biblical heroines in modern European art, less is known about the contribution to the portrayals of biblical women by modern Jewish artists. This monograph explores why and how heroines of the Scripture: Judith, Esther and the Shulamite received a particular meaning for acculturated Jewish artists originating from the Polish lands in the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first two decades of the twentieth century. It convincingly proves that artworks by Maurycy Gottlieb, Wilhem Wachtel, Ephraim Moses Lilien, Maurycy Minkowski, Samuel Hirszenberg and Boris Schatz significantly differed from renderings of contemporary non-Jewish artists, adopting a "Jewish perspective", creating complex and psychological portrayals of the heroines inspired by Jewish literature and as well as by historical and cultural phenomena of Jewish revival and the cultural Zionism movement"--

Am Sinai kommt JHWH seinem Volk in der Tora und im Heiligtum so nahe, dass er sich in seinem Gnadenwillen selbst überwindet. Diachron werden die Vorgänger-Kompositionen rekonstruiert. Die älteste Erzählung handelt von der Konstitution Israels als Republik mit Dekalog und Bundesbuch als Verfassung. Die Deuteronomisten passen diese Erzählung ihren Gesetzen an, die Priester-Komposition entwirft ein vom Volk gestiftetes Heiligtum. Am Ende erscheint Israel als differenziertes Gemeinwesen, das auf den Säulen Gesetz und Heiligtum ruht. Synthesen reflektieren jeweils das Verhältnis der beiden Auslegungsweisen.

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts.

Das autofiktional angelegte Nachkriegswerk ist dabei maßgeblich durch die Berufswahl geprägt: In einer ›Poetik der Körperlichkeit‹ fungiert der Körper als ›Übersetzungsinstrument‹ und Metapher der Erinnerung an psychische Traumatisierungen – zumeist begründet in den Erfahrungen des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Untersucht und literaturhistorisch eingeordnet werden die literarischen Strategien der grotesken Gestaltung von Körperlichkeit in Merz’ Œuvre. Zugleich wird die poetologische Bedeutung der dem Werk immanenten Parallelführung von Physiotherapie und Kunst – auch unter Rückgriff auf unveröffentlichte Texte und Nachlassdokumente – aufgeschlüsselt. Sucht Merz’ Literatur, geprägt von der Frage nach der Möglichkeit einer ›Literatur nach 1945‹, den adäquaten Umgang mit dem Erlebten, so will die vorliegende Publikation einen Beitrag leisten, den zu wenig gewürdigten Schriftsteller dem Publikum und der Kritik in Erinnerung zu rufen.

    Abstract: Die Gesetzesthematik ist im hebräischen Esterbuch omnipräsent. Einerseits erzählt es von einem Königreich, in dem es für fast alles ein Gesetz gibt. Andererseits wird die Ausrottung von Esters und Mordechais Volk damit begründet, dass es anderen als den königlichen Gesetzen folge. Trotz dieses Befundes fehlt eine umfassende Untersuchung zu Bedeutung und Funktion des Themas. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt sich dieser Aufgabe an. Unter Berücksichtigung von Motivkonstellationen und intertextuellen Bezügen bietet sie eine ausführliche Analyse dieser Erzählfassung, die Gott bekanntlich unerwähnt lässt. Die Analyse erlaubt den Schluss, dass insbesondere der Motivkomplex "König als Ordnungsinstanz" eine theologische Dimension einspielt, denn im Spiegel irdisch-königlicher Rechtsverdrehung gewinnen der wahre Gottkönig JHWH und seine Tora an Kontur. Schließlich bietet die Studie eine Einordnung der Erzählung als Beitrag zum Toradiskurs der vormakkabäischen hellenistischen Zeit.

    Abstract: Das Ezechielbuch verarbeitet die Katastrophe des Babylonischen Exils auf einzigartige Weise: Es zieht Symbolik von Übergangsriten (rites de passage) heran, um das Exil als notwendige Phase eines Prozesses darzustellen, der Israel und die Lesenden verändert. Über das ganze Ezechielbuch hinweg werden Räume und Bewegungen beschrieben. Sie lassen sich analog zu Symbolen in Übergangsritualen verstehen, wie sie von A. van Gennep und V. W. Turner beschrieben wurden. Israel hatte sich von JHWH entfernt. Um wieder in einen Status als Gottesvolk geführt werden zu können, muss ein dreistufiger Prozess durchlaufen werden, der die räumliche Entfernung aus Jerusalem und die Rückkehr beinhaltet. Die mittlere, liminale Phase, in der allein Israel erneuert werden kann, entspricht dem Exil. Beim Lesen des Ezechielbuches kann der Prozess performativ mitvollzogen werden, so dass auch die Lesenden transformiert werden. Die Untersuchung verbindet alttestamentliche Wissenschaft mit Raum- und Ritualtheorien.

As a forward-looking and multidisciplinary endeavor, The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Music Studies maps this emerging field within the framework of spatiality, temporality, and collectivity as analytical and conceptual categories. It does so by embracing all hemispheres, and interrogating Jewish music’s meaning of various places and spaces across the temporal frame of antiquity through the early twenty-first century. The introductory chapter provides a theoretical foundation that paves the way for the rich selection of case studies brought together in the subsequent sections. These case studies document the different facets of Jewish music and theorize its multivalent correlation with spaces and collectives around the world. The thirty diverse chapters, conceived by an international team of thirty-one outstanding scholars, are divided into eight thematically organized sections, the first of which addresses Jewish music in various lands and territories (some without defined borders in time and space), followed by sections that focus on cities, as well selected spaces therein—ghetto, concert hall, archive, and sacred and ritual spaces. These sections, which largely look at actual and concrete spaces (roughly presented in the order of scale), are followed by the phenomenological spaces of destruction and remembrance, and shekhinah, that is, divine presence.

    Abstract: Why are conceptions of afterlife so diverse in both Jewish and Christian antiquity? This collection of essays offers explanations for this diversity through the lens of social memory theory. The contributors attempt to understand how and why received traditions about the afterlife needed to be altered, invented and even forgotten if they were to have relevance in the present. Select ancient texts conveying the hopes and fears of the afterlife are viewed as products of transmission processes that appropriated the past in conformity with identity constructs of each community. The range of literature in this collection spans from the earliest receptions of Israelite traditions within early Judaism to the Patristic/Rabbinic period
