Abstract: "Ephrem, one of the earliest Syriac Christian writers, lived on the eastern outskirts of the Roman Empire during the fourth century. Although he wrote polemical works against Jews and pagans, and identified with post-Nicene Christianity, his writings are also replete with parallels with Jewish traditions and he is the leading figure in an ongoing debate about the Jewish character of Syriac Christianity. This book focuses on early ideas about betrothal, marriage, and sexual relations, including their theological and legal implications, and positions Ephrem at a precise intersection between his Semitic origin and his Christian commitment. Alongside his adoption of customs and legal stances drawn from his Greco-Roman and Christian surroundings, Ephrem sometimes reveals unique legal concepts which are closer to early Palestinian, sectarian positions than to the Roman or Jewish worlds. The book therefore explains naturalistic legal thought in Christian literature and sheds light on the rise of Syriac Christianity"--

Abstract: Introduction: Cicero and the translation of philosophy from Greece to Rome -- Cicero's project in On the nature of the gods and On divination -- The beatitude of Gaius Velleius -- Balbus the reformer and Cotta the pontifex -- Quintus' Stoic case for divination -- Marcus' arguments against divination -- Marcus' moderation.
Abstract: "During the months before and after he saw Julius Caesar assassinated on the Ides of March, 44 BC, Cicero wrote two philosophical dialogues about religion and theology: On the nature of the gods and On divination. This book brings to life his portraits of Stoic and Epicurean theology, as well as the scepticism of the new Academy, his own school. We meet the Epicurean gods who live a life of pleasure and care nothing for us, the determinism and beauty of the Stoic universe, itself our benevolent creator, and the reply to both that traditional religion is better served by a lack of dogma. Cicero hoped that these reflections would renew the traditional religion at Rome, with its prayers and sacrifices, temples and statues, myths and poets, and all forms of divination. This volume is the first fully to investigate Cicero's dialogues as the work of a careful philosophical author"--

Abstract: "The Holocaust in Greece involved multiple actors. The German invasion in spring 1941 established three occupations regimes: Germans in the strategic areas of central Macedonia, Athens, and Thessaloniki; Italians all over Greece apart from Crete; and Bulgarians in eastern Macedonia and Thrace. For the sizeable Jewish community, these occupations posed a mortal threat. Despite the lack of credible statistics, a generally acknowledged number on the prewar Greek Jewish population is between 72,000-77,000, the Jews from Dodecanese included, albeit as Italian citizens. Some 50,000 of them resided in Thessaloniki"--

Abstract: "This major reinterpretation of the Holocaust surveys the destruction of the European Jews within the broader context of Nazi violence against other victim groups. Christian Gerlach offers a unique social history of mass violence which reveals why particular groups were persecuted and what it was that connected the fate of these groups and the policies against them. He explores the diverse ideological, political and economic motivations which lay behind the murder of the Jews and charts the changing dynamics of persecution during the course of the war. The book brings together both German actions and those of non-German states and societies, shedding new light on the different groups and vested interests involved and their role in the persecution of non-Jews as well. Ranging across continental Europe, it reveals that popular notions of race were often more important in shaping persecution than scientific racism or Nazi dogma"--

Abstract: "This book proposes to understand the Holocaust by looking at Nazi and German culture and sensibilities that made the persecution and extermination imaginable, possible, and conceivable. It critically reviews the keycurrents in Holocaust historiography in the last generation, arguing for a new approach that places at the center not simply what happened during the Nazi years--the anti-Semetic ideological campaign, the machinery of killing, the brutal massacres during the way--but especially what the Nazi and other Germans thought was happening; a necessary, deathly war against the key enemy, the Jews"--

Abstract: "Most ancient societies were patriarchal in outlook, but not all patriarchies are equally condescending toward women. Impelled by the gnawing question of whether the inferiority of women is integral to the Torah's vision, Sassoon sets out to determine where the Bible, the Talmud, and related literature, especially the Dead Sea Scrolls, sit on this continuum of patriarchal condescension. Of course, there are multiple voices in both Biblical and Talmudic literature, but more surprising is how divergent these voices are. Some points of view seem intent on the disenfranchisement and domestication of women, whereas others prove to be not far short of egalitarian. Opinions that downplay the applicability of the Biblical commandments to women and that strongly deprecate Torah study by women emerge from this study as arguably no more than the views of an especially vocal minority"--
