    Abstract: 1944. Palestine is under British Mandate as the Second World War rages. 13-year-old Maya arrives at an orphanage on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, her mother having deserted her and her father having remarried and finding it difficult to raise her. Dr. Markowski, the orphanage director, is stunned by her arrival; he knows her parents and is reminded of his tormented love for her mother.
