Abstract:
The decision of the Vatican to publish a selection of documents, in 11 volumes, on the Holocaust period, "Actes et documents du Saint Siège relatifs à la Seconde guerre mondial", has made possible a reassessment of papal policy. Contends that the Vatican's impotence was a result of Pope Pius XII's stance of "pessimistic neutrality", the lack of will or resources for a major campaign to rescue Jews, and the obstructiveness of the Axis and Allied governments. When intervention did occur it delayed or reduced deportations, but it could not prevent them.
