Abstract:
Describes the Szálasi coup, together with its implications for Jews in Hungary (a new wave of terror, the transport of Jews to western Hungary for fortification works, and deportation to concentration camps). Gives information on several concentration camp populations, including Mauthausen (nationality, gender, age-group, reasons for imprisonment). Relates the special treatment of Hungarian political prisoners and the story of regular prisoners, including Jews. Deals with the question of homosexuality and the fate of children in Mauthausen. Describes the February escape of prisoners and the effects of camp life on the human psyche, e.g. the distortions of personality. Discusses the last two months in the camp (evacuation, death marches, brutal killings, the saving of a few, liberation). Based on archival material from the Mauthausen Museum, a Hungarian memoir by Sándor Millok from 1945, and Hans Marsalek's book on Mauthausen (1974).
