Abstract:
Deals with a treatise against the Jews attributed to Appolonius Molon, a prominent orator who lived in Rhodes in the first half of the 1st century BCE. He was identified in writings of the ancient period as hostile toward the Jews. Examines his attitude toward the Jews in the context of his views and the culture of his times. Regards the treatise as an ethnographic monograph in which Appolonius draws on pro-Jewish and anti-Jewish sources known in his times (e.g. Lysimachus, Timochares, Posidonius of Apamea) which describe the origins of the Jews, their customs and the actions of their leaders. Contends that Appolonius' adverse treatment of the Jews in his treatise does not necessarily reflect negative personal experiences with Jews. It may be regarded as a polemical response to contemporary works and to disciples of rival philosophical schools.
