Abstract:
In the late Middle Ages, citizenship was a critical concern among both Jews and Christians. Even when Jews did not have the official status of citizens, they participated in the political life of their towns. They shared the same feelings of belonging in the city as the Christians. The comparison between Marseilles, Catalonia, and Majorca reveals unexpected similarities. In more general terms, this paper sheds light on what it meant to be a citizen, a Christian, or a Jew in the medieval town.
