Kurzfassung:
In May 1944 Joel Brand brought a Nazi proposal from Budapest to Istanbul, aiming to ransom Hungarian Jews for 10,000 trucks and other goods. The proposal included an invitation to Menahem Bader, a Yishuv emissary in Istanbul, to go to Berlin to negotiate on the basis of Brand's proposal. Traces activities of the Jewish Agency Executive concerning the proposal. Focuses on reactions of the JAE, the Jewish leadership in Palestine, and the Yishuv emissaries in Istanbul. Reports on contacts between the Jewish representatives and British, Hungarian, and American intelligence agents in Istanbul and elsewhere. Close examination of the events in Istanbul in May-June 1944 does not support the opinion that Ben-Gurion had no interest in the rescue of European Jews and, therefore, in Brand's proposal. Although he did not believe in dealing with the Nazis, Ben-Gurion was prepared to negotiate with them behind the backs of the Allies if the latter would reject the "blood for trucks" deal.
