Abstract:
Based on a lecture delivered on 24 April 1996 at the Catholic University of Leuven. Describes the substitutionist tradition of the Church, in which it not only substitutes itself for Israel, but also declares that Israel's destiny will be absorbed by the Church; that the Church is superior to Israel; and that the Church represents the gospel of grace, whereas Israel symbolizes failure and judgment. Supports Protestant postwar views, such as that of Karl Barth, that relate to Israel and the Church through a theology of one covenant shared by Jews and Christians. Klappert believes that Jesus was sent as a messiah for the Gentiles, but also for the benefit of Israel. In accordance with his "Christology of Yeshua", he claims that it is the destiny of the Church to be re-rooted in Judaism and that Jesus' Second Coming will be followed by an integration of other nations into God's covenant with Israel.
