Kurzfassung:
Despite the absence of a Jewish community, Spain was influenced by European antisemitism. In Spain, the "Jewish question" was an element of the ideological struggle between liberalism and conservatism within the Church on the issue of freedom of religion. Quotes remarks made in parliament by the liberal politician Emilio Castelar, and by politicians hostile to the Jews, such as Vicente de Manterola, in June 1869. Analyzes literary and historical works by writers, including Benito Pérez Galdós, José Amador de los Ríos, and J. Toronji. The wave of pogroms during 1881-82 in Russia provoked a controversy in the Spanish Church: the liberals called for protests, and the Church condemned antisemitism, but part of the hierarchy continued to perceive the Jews as the enemy. Comments, also, on the influence of French antisemitism during the Dreyfus Affair
