Abstract:
This essay focuses on Albert Einstein's stay in Bologna and his defense (expressed in a little-known interview) of democracy, peace, the Jews and the Zionist cause. Einstein's stay in Bologna is one of the most beautiful pages of Italian scientific culture and also one of the saddest; all the protag- onists of that event - Einstein, Enriques, Born, Levi-Civita, Castelnuovo, Todesco, Horn d'Arturo- were Jewish scientists and all were engulfed by anti-Semitism. The essay ends by discussing the lack of understanding of Einstein's theory, the fascistization of the University of Bologna and the suffering that in Italy Fascists and Nazis caused the scientist or his family.
