Abstract:
Frequently it has been pointed out that in Biblical Hebrew literature the narrator tends to be less overt. Nonetheless, this has seldom been substantiated with the narrative mode as an analytical category. The latter especially applies to the representation of speech. Herein, it is debated, if besides direct and indirect speech also free indirect discourse may be attested in the Hebrew Bible. Cynthia L. Miller has denied this possibility, which has been notably advocated by Meir Sternberg. However, using a linguistically substantiated narrative analysis Miller’s objections can be called into question. This justifies the fundamental possibility of free indirect discourse with wehinne-phrases.
