Abstract:
Discusses Levi's last work, "The Drowned and the Saved", as a major contribution to understanding the role of remembrance decades after the Shoah. Compares two essential components in Levi's view of humanity: the capacity for evil coupled with the quest for justice. Interprets the concepts of "memory" and "crime" through Levi's perspective on Auschwitz. Subscribes to the author's creed of humanity's fallibility regarding memory, but distinguishes between the right of the victim to forget and the obligation of the criminal to remember. Reflects on Levi's view that man plays one of four roles: the benefactor, the receiver, the criminal, or the victim. Contrasts justice and vengeance, and contends that forgiveness for crimes such as the Holocaust requires society's participation in the stages of moral education.
