Abstract:
Based on a lecture given in January 1989 in West Berlin and in October 1989 in Leipzig. A survey of relations between Jews and Christians in Poland, emphasizing the fact that Jews have never been considered as equal citizens. Mentions the mass emigration of Russian Jews to Poland between 1945-46 which caused an increase in antisemitism and pogroms in Rzeszów, Kraków, and Kielce, based also on blood libels. Many Jews left Poland. Stalin's persecution of Jewish writers in 1952 aroused a new antisemitic wave in Poland. During the anti-Zionist campaign in 1968, ca. 13,000 Jews left Poland. Contends that the remaining Jews serve as scapegoats for the country's economic misery. Antisemitic propaganda is propagated by the Polish press. But recent changes in attitude of the Poles and the Catholic Church towards the Jews and Judaism, opting for better understanding, has reduced the virulence of antisemitic incidents.
