Abstract: A defense of Pope Pius XII against his detractors, especially in response to Costa Gavras' film "Amen" and to the views of Daniel J. Goldhagen. Quotes from various sources which show that the Pope helped the Jews. States that the bishops and priests were instructed to convince parishioners that racism was not the way of the Church. However, fear of retaliation by the Nazi occupiers was overwhelming. In the Netherlands, on 26 July 1943 the bishops publicly denounced the deportation of the Jews. As a result, those Jews who converted to Catholicism were the first to be deported. American newspapers reported that in August 1942 Pius XII protested against the arrests and deportations of the French Jews. In October 1942 a London newspaper reported that the Nazi authorities were infuriated with the Pope because of his interventions on behalf of the French Jews. Due to his interventions, thousands of Jews escaped. Contends that Pius XII should be recognized by Yad Vashem as one of the Righteous among the Nations.
