Abstract:
In the 1930s, Jews constituted a large part of the Belorussian ruling strata (in Soviet political slang, "nomenclatura"). A relatively large part of this Jewish faction survived World War II; in 1945, the proportion of Jews in the political and economic leadership of the republic remained principally the same. The situation changed drastically in 1946-47, with the Stalinist campaign against "rootless cosmopolitans"; numerous Jews were purged from their positions. The "Jewish nomenclatura" suffered a major purge in 1951-52 at the initiative of the Belorussian party leadership. In the wake of the "Doctors' Plot" affair in Moscow, popular antisemitism in Belorussia increased greatly; the local authorities encouraged this trend. Among the "people's demands" was one to remove all the Jews from administrative positions.
