Abstract:
Contends that the events of the Holocaust - citing some horrific cases - challenge some of the most fundamental beliefs of Judaism, Christianity, and modern culture, and that the challenge must be confronted and not ignored. Suggests a new category of "dialectical faith", that recognizes the power of evil in our world but still has the courage to believe in God. States the hope that "the cloud of smoke of the bodies by day and the pillar of fire of the crematoria by night" may yet guide humanity to ensure that never again will a Holocaust be possible.
