Abstract: In autumn 1989, Ahmed Rami, the director of the Radio Islam radio station in Stockholm, was convicted of conducting a smear campaign against an ethnic group - the Jews - and sentenced to six months in prison. Called as an expert witness, Jan Bergman, professor of Religious History at Uppsala University, made a series of sensational allegations about Judaism, some of them belonging to the classic antisemitic repertory (e.g. ritual murder). Bergman's main supporter was Sigbert Axelson, the head of the Theological Institution of Uppsala University. Contends that the most disquieting aspect of the case was the lack of reaction of the university establishment. As the case attracted media attention, the Dean of the Theological Faculty sought an independent assessment by Norwegian theologian Inge Lønning. In 1994 Lønning concluded that Bergman had been an irresponsible expert witness. Following this report, the board of the Theological Faculty publicly criticized Bergman, Axelson, the general faculty and overall university indifference. As a result, Axelson and the Dean, Carl Fredrik Hallencreutz, are leaving their posts as heads of faculty institutions in 1995.
