Abstract:
Examines novels by three Brazilian authors - Carlos Heitor Cony, Moacyr Scliar, and Roberto Drummond - in which Jewish protagonists evince or hint at opposition to the dictatorship which ruled in Brazil from 1964-1985. Discusses Cony's novella "Pessach; a travessia" ("Passover; the Crossing"; 1967) which tells about a Jew who at first supports the regime but later identifies with his Jewish roots. This book also relates to the story of Passover in the Bible, to the Holocaust, and to other elements of Jewish history and culture. Cony is of Moroccan-French and Jewish descent, but does not consider himself Jewish. Scliar is Jewish and has written many works on issues of Jewish identity, especially in Brazil. His stories relate to Jewish history, including the Holocaust, and often allude to resistance against oppression and persecution. Drummond, who is not Jewish, published a novel "Hitler manda lebrancas" ("Hitler Sends Regards"; 1984) dealing with a family of Jewish Holocaust survivors living in Brazil in the 1980s, who are haunted by the persecution they endured in the Holocaust.
