Abstract:
In Argentina, discussion of Jewish issues by non-Jewish intellectuals is almost non-existent, and when it does exist it is condemnatory and often antisemitic, such as in the case of Hugo Wast, Julián Martel, and Walter Beveraggi Allende. A large majority of Argentinian non-Jewish intellectuals do not confront the 100 years of Jewish Argentinian history and antisemitic aggression: the pogroms of the "Semana trágica" in 1919, the outrages of the Tacuara movement during the 1960s (in the wake of the Eichmann affair), the years of military terror, the bombing of the Israeli embassy and of the AMIA center, and other innumerable acts of discrimination and desecration. Argentinian intellectuals do not treat these issues as part of Argentinian history, and avoid making an effort to understand the Jews (the "other") living in their country. An exception to this attitude is Ramón Alcalde, who wrote the essay "De judíos, dineros y bolsas; Drumont, Bloy, Zola, Martel" ["Sitio" 1 (1981)], in which he traces the links between European, especially French, antisemitism and that in Argentina.
