Abstract:
Presents the text of the homily "Maŝá Hayim" (on pp. 264-271) by the Rabbi of Smyrna, Hayim Palachi (1788-1869), delivered in 1864 and published in 1865, in Ladino. In the homily, Rabbi Palachi demonstrates the absurdity of the accusations of ritual murder directed against the Jews. Romeu comments that these accusations were recurrent during the Passover season. Mentions, also, that in 1840, in Damascus and Rhodes, Jews were accused of killing Christians in order to use their blood for making matzo. Both cases resulted in violence against the Jews, which came to an end with the intervention of the government on the side of the Jews.
Note:
Includes a critical edition of the text of the homily (pp. 264-272) delivered before Passover 1864 and inveighing against blood libels regarding the Passover matzo.
