Abstract:
The second tome of the anonymous Spanish picaresque novel "La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes" (published ca. 1551-52) is traditionally interpreted as criticism of the institutions of Catholicism. Proposes a new interpretation, as an attack against the growing number of Conversos who succeeded in advancing within the Church. Argues that this was a hot issue at that time (the Archbishop of Toledo limited the ordination of Conversos in 1547), and that is why the action is set in Maqueda, Toledo province, known for its "Jewish inhabitants". Lazarillo's master, the priest, is accused of greed - a "Jewish feature" - and his cherished "worn and old ark", or chest, is in fact a symbol of Judaism, the threat to Christian society.
