Abstract: Discusses the problem of the "objectivity" of historical documents, presenting as an example a document referring to the presumed conversion and death of a Portuguese Jewish member of the Amsterdam community, Jacob Bueno, in Andalusia in 1647. Bueno was captured in Spain with three other Jews during a period of fighting between Spain and the Netherlands. They were imprisoned in a Franciscan monastery, and were not returned in the exchange of prisoners in 1648. Suggests that an alternative reading of the document casts doubts on the sincerity of Bueno's conversion, which perhaps resulted from pressure.
