Abstract: Between 1939-1942, Argentinian immigration authorities, alleging legal irregularities, refused in several cases to allow the disembarkation of Jewish refugees arriving on ships from Europe. The local Jewish press, in Yiddish or in Spanish ("Di Idische Tzeitung", "Di Presse", "Mundo Israelita", and "La Luz"), not only reported detailed information on these cases, but also took a combative stance. They denounced the anti-Jewish policies of the government and demanded that gestures of solidarity with the Jewish refugees be made by the authorities and the public.

Abstract: During the regime of president Getúlio Vargas in Brazil (1930-45), the Catholic Church supported the official policy of nationalism and intolerance. Its main press organ was "A Ordem", published by the Centro Dom Vital, an institution which united outstanding Catholic personalities. The journal contended that the Jews, together with Protestants, communists, and Masons, were a danger to the political and cultural existence of Brazil. Its propaganda was based on a mixture of traditional religious anti-Judaism and modern political antisemitism (e.g. the Jew as a world conspirator), but lacked a racist approach. Asserts that the stance of the intellectuals at the Centro Dom Vital had no roots in Brazilian society; it resulted rather from the influence of French right-wing Catholicism.
