Abstract:
Discusses Cervantes' attitude toward Jews in his comedy (also called "El trato de Argel") about Christian captives in Algiers, which is based on his own experience as a prisoner in 1578-83. In the play, a comical Jewish character becomes an object of mockery and cruelty by Christians and Moors. Asserts that the play presents a stylization of the condition of the Jews in Algiers at that time, and that it is not possible to deduce from its content what Cervantes' stance was toward Jews. Disagrees with the Spanish philologist Américo Castro (1885-1972), who felt that the play expressed Cervantes' views. States that Castro, in "El pensamiento de Cervantes" (1925), ascribes to Cervantes an antisemitic attitude. Concedes that, later, Castro changed his perspective radically, when he asserted in "La realidad histórica de España" (1966) that Cervantes presents a multidimentional view of the conflicts he describes in the play.
