Abstract:
Persecutions and mass conversions in Spain (1391) led many New Christians in Spain and especially in Portugal to choose ecclesiastic careers as a way to continue studying the Bible and retain contact with Judaism. In Latin America, the term "Portuguese" became synonymous with "New Christian" or "Judaizer". Describes the fate of these clergymen, some of whom were hounded by the Inquisition and either perished in the "auto-da-fe" of Lima or fled to Italy.
