Abstract:
The edict of expulsion of 1492 put an end to the life of the Jewish community of Hervás (Duchy of Béjar, Castile; today Extremadura). The edict guaranteed the Jews the option to sell or transfer their assets before leaving the country, but the local nobility opposed those measures, seeking compensation for the loss of tax revenue resulting from the expulsion. The Duke of Béjar, Álvaro II, declared Jewish assets the property of the Duchy. Many assets were abandoned, others were sold somehow or transferred to the Conversos in the town. In 1494 some of the expelled Jews returned as Conversos. They suffered persecution from the Duke, and most of them went back into exile. In 1506 and in 1514 the Inquisition tried and condemned some of the Conversos. In 1578 the Purity of Blood statutes were established in the Duchy in order to prevent their social assimilation
