Abstract:
Examines two anti-Converso satirical works written in the 15th century. This type of literature appeared in various genres; what unites all of them is their intent to mock individuals or to vilify Conversos as a whole. While most of these works convey their hostility in crude, stereotypical fashion, a few are distinguished by their clever rhetoric, such as the two examples discussed here. One is a document entitled "Privilege that King Juan II granted to a man named Hernando, one of his favored, to become a Marrano even though he was not one by birth" (found in an 18th-century manuscript "copied by hand from an old book") - here edited for the first time (pp. 306-324). It satirizes not only Conversos but also the nobility. The second work, "Transcript of a letter of privilege that King Juan II granted to a hidalgo", is found in two manuscripts. All the manuscripts are in the National Library in Madrid.
Note:
Includes an edition of the satire (pp. 306-324).
