Abstract:
Discusses the attitude of the Uruguayan authorities toward Jewish refugees between 1933-41. In response to the wave of refugees, the rightist government of Gabriel Terra (1933-38), in an atmosphere of growing antisemitism, enacted restrictive immigration laws which resulted in the rejection of hundreds of Jewish immigrants. Later, the more liberal government of Alfredo Baldomir (1938-43) publicly declared its willingness to help refugees, but in fact he continued with the policy of his predecessor, by means of administrative and bureaucratic obstacles. Despite the restrictions, almost 10,000 Jewish refugees entered the country between 1933-41.
