Abstract:
On pp. 369-380, reflects on the transformation of the collective memory of the Holocaust in the USSR and, in particular, in independent Ukraine (since 1991). In Ukraine, the memory of the Holocaust is intertwined with the memory of other horrific events, such as the famine of 1932-33, memories of which were suppressed in the Soviet period. Now, in Ukrainian textbooks, there is a tendency to present material on the Holocaust in the context of World War II, rather than as part of the history of Ukraine during the war. The only exception to this rule is the textbook by Yaroslav Hrytsak, published in 2000. Pp. 381-392 discuss a survey conducted in 2002 in four schools in Kharkiv, aiming to ascertain what the pupils know and think about the Holocaust.
