Abstract:
Describes the pogrom in Irkutsk (eastern Siberia) which broke out in October 1905 in the wake of Russia's defeat in the Russo-Japanese war and the 1905 revolution. On 13 October a strike began in the city (as part of the all-Russian railway workers' strike); it provoked anti-Jewish incitements in the right-wing press and "patriotic" rallies. On 17 October the pogrom began, with the participation of the local Black Hundred and the police. The funeral of Ilya Viner, a local Zionist leader and a victim of the pogrom, was attended by many non-Jews and turned into a demonstration. During the great railway workers' strike in Russia, pogroms also erupted in other Siberian cities, in particular Tomsk and Krasnoyarsk.
