Abstract:
Based on a Russian translation of Michel Wieviorka’s "La tentation antisémite; haine des Juifs dans la France d’aujourd’hui" (2005), compares antisemitism in Russia to that in France and in the whole of the Western world, highlighting common traits of Russian antisemitism and its Western counterpart, as well as uniquely Russian traits of antisemitism. Both right-wing and left-wing strains of antisemitism are widespread in Russia to the same extent as in the West, while the Muslim strain is much less pronounced in Russia. On the other hand, Christian anti-Judaism is much more conspicuous in Russia. It should be noted that both the anti-Jewish authors and their audiences are largely ignorant in regard to the Jewish religion. Among the Russian accusations against Jews are the acts of organizing the Bolshevik Revolution and the "ritual murder" of the Tsar’s family. The main venue for dissemination of antisemitism in Russia is now the Internet. Notes that, in comparison to the West, antisemitism is not on the rise in present-day Russia nor is it abating. Antisemitism, however, is the main, if not the only, factor which is maintaining the Jews' identity in Russia today.
