Abstract:
On 4 April 1953 the Soviet news agency TASS related that the Ministry of Interior had examined the materials of the "Doctors' Plot" and acquitted and released the defendants. On pp. 316-330, presents three memoranda (two of them by the Kiev Regional Party Committee, one by a department of the Central Committee of Ukraine, directed to the first secretary of the Ukrainian CC on 4-7 April 1953) which inform the CC leadership on the popular reaction to TASS's information. The memos include excerpts from comments made by people in various localities of Ukraine, mainly Kiev. While ca. 40% of them approve the official decision, some of the people deplore the fact that the decision to release the doctors was published openly and some believe that the decision resulted from pressure exerted by the West on the USSR. There are also some blatantly antisemitic comments.
