Abstract:
Discusses recent Jewish historiographical approaches (especially studies written by Carol Iancu) to the "Jewish question" in 19th-century Romania, questioning their views on the importance of antisemitism and xenophobia in molding the Romanian nationalist doctrine and Romanian official policy toward the emancipation of the Jews. Pleads for a broader, more comprehensive perspective which would more appropriately place the problem in the historical, political, and economic context of Romania in the second half of the 19th century, and in the context of the social structure of the Jewish population.
Note:
On the methodology of recent historiography on the "Jewish question" in 19th-century Romania.
