Abstract:
The friendship between the two Romanian intellectuals - the rightist Mircea Eliade and the Jewish Mihail Sebastian - was a kind of miracle. In the early 1930s, Eliade was still relatively tolerant and maintained friendly relations with some ethnically non-Romanian intellectuals. In the late 1930s, with Eliade's increasing connections with the Legionary Movement, their friendship began to crumble. Sebastian could not excuse his friend's antisemitism and fascist sympathies. Based on the diaries written by both Eliade and Sebastian, traces the cooling of their relations. In 1942, during his short return to Bucharest, Eliade refused to meet with Sebastian. However, when Sebastian was killed in 1945 in a car accident, Eliade, quite sincerely, bewailed his former friend.
