Abstract: States that the Inquisition was founded in Portugal following a prolonged struggle between King João III, eager to centralize political and religious power and to extort the finances of the Conversos, and Pope Clement VII and other clergymen who rejected coercion in religious matters (e.g. their defense of Conversos in 1533). Although ecclesiastical authorities denounced the prohibition against Portuguese Conversos leaving the country in 1532, and other persecutions, they eventually succumbed to the will of João III and agreed with the institution of the Inquisition.
