Abstract:
This dissertation, which was submitted to the University of Coimbra, Portugal in 1997, examines Jakob Wassermann's role as a German and a Jew focusing on his novel "Die Juden von Zirndorf". In the beginning of the 20th century Jakob Wassermann was a popular author in Germany. The novel was first published in Cadolzburg in 1897 and tells the story of a prophet in 18th century Fuerth, who gives the Jewish community hope for a better life in Germany.
