Abstract:
Presents three historiographic approaches to the "purity of blood" statutes. A. Sicroff, H. Beinart, Y. Yerushalmi, and A. Domínguez Ortiz view the statutes as an instrument of ethnic segregation. They contend that the statutes were applied against all Conversos, regardless of their religious behavior. J. Salazar Acha, M. Orfali, and M. Lambert-Gorges hold that the statutes were used for religious discrimination, in order to maintain the ideological purity of Spanish institutions. J. Dedieu, J. Edwards, and R. Carrasco stress that the statutes were used for social discrimination against Conversos, since they aimed at preventing them from becoming part of the Spanish aristocracy. Agrees with the ethnic approach, arguing that the statutes related to the Conversos as a totality, ignoring their religious behavior or social position.
