Abstract:
Bornstein was a Polish-Jewish painter and a poet. He was raised in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, studied art in Kraków, and was about to launch his artistic career when the war broke out. During 1939-41 he lived in Lvov and Białystok, under Russian occupation. In June 1941 he resolved to move, together with his parents, to the Warsaw ghetto. There he lived in depression and isolation, but he continued to draw and write poetry. He died in 1942 either in the ghetto or in Treblinka. Nearly all of his paintings were destroyed during the war; several pieces of verse and a major poem survived and are held at the Jewish Historical Institute.
